5 CGPA to Percentage: Chart, Calculator and Pass Lines

CGPA & SGPA5.00 to 5.99Pass and second classChecked Nov 2026

5 CGPA to percentage is 50 percent if you multiply by 10, 47.5 percent under CBSE (5 x 9.5) and 42.5 percent under the VTU 2018 scheme, because that scheme subtracts 0.75 before multiplying by 10. Check your grade card regulation to know which applies.

The 5 band is where pass and second class lines sit at many universities, and where 50 and 55 percent eligibility rules start to bite. This page shows those lines, the CGPA each rule needs for 50 and 55 percent, worked examples, how clearing a backlog changes your CGPA, and the full chart. Your university's conversion is the final word.

Percentage = CGPA x 10, CGPA x 9.5, or (CGPA - offset) x 10

The offset is 0.75 for the VTU 2018 scheme, MAKAUT and JNTUK, and 0.5 for GTU, JNTUH and BPUT. SPPU uses 10 x CGPA minus 2.5 from 4.75 to 5.74 and 5 x CGPA + 26.25 from 5.75 to 6.74.

Quick reading: 5 CGPA to percentage by rule

Rules split widely at this level. The minus 0.75 rule can sit 7.5 marks below the x 10 rule, which may be the difference between meeting a 50 percent line and missing it.

Mumbai University no longer uses its old 7.1 x CGPI + 11 line on Arts, Commerce, Management and Science results; those colleges compute the percentage from marks. The column is for older grade cards only.

  1. Take the CGPA from your consolidated grade card.
  2. Note your university and scheme.
  3. Enter both in the calculator above.
  4. Compare the percentage with the 50 or 55 percent line on your form.
  5. If you have backlogs, check how clearing them changes your CGPA.

The 50 and 55 percent lines

Many applications ask for 50 or 55 percent in graduation. Here is the smallest two decimal CGPA that reaches each, with the percentage it gives in brackets.

CGPA for 50 and 55 percent
Rule50 percent55 percent
x 105 (50)5.5 (55)
CBSE x 9.55.27 (50.065)5.79 (55.005)
Minus 0.5 (GTU, JNTUH, BPUT)5.5 (50)6 (55)
Minus 0.75 (VTU 2018 scheme, MAKAUT, JNTUK)5.75 (50)6.25 (55)
SPPU bands5.25 (50)5.75 (55)
Old Mumbai rule5.5 (50.05)6.2 (55.02)

A JNTUK student, for example, needs 5.75 for 50 percent, while a VIT student reaches 50 at 5.00. Some of these answers fall in the 6 band; see our 6 CGPA chart for those values.

How the calculator handles a 5 point CGPA

Put the CGPA in the first box with both decimals, and select the university or board in the second. The result shows the percentage, the rule used, and how the other rules read that CGPA, so you can see at a glance whether a different rule would cross 50.

Pressing Swap direction reverses the question: enter 50 or 55 and it returns the CGPA you need under the rule you picked. For a whole degree built from semester figures, begin at our SGPA to CGPA tool.

Step by step: 5.91, 5.75, 5.8 and 5.5

VTU 2018 scheme, CGPA 5.91. 5.91 minus 0.75 = 5.16; times 10 = 51.6 percent. That is second class.

JNTUK, CGPA 5.75. (5.75 minus 0.75) x 10 = 50 percent, and 5.75 is exactly where JNTUK second class begins.

SPPU, CGPA 5.8. 5.8 lies in the 5.75 to 6.74 band, so 5 x 5.8 + 26.25 = 29 + 26.25 = 55.25.

Old CBSE Class 10, CGPA 5.5. 5.5 x 9.5 = 52.25 percent as the indicative figure.

Backlogs, improvement and the 5 band

A low CGPA often comes from one or two failed papers. Where a university counts an F with zero points, clearing it lifts the CGPA.

One cleared backlog. CGPA 5.6 over 160 credits gives 896 points. A 4 credit F later cleared with grade point 6 adds 24 points: (896 + 24) / 160 = 5.75. At JNTUK that moves the student from pass class to second class.

Half the degree left. CGPA 5.3 after 4 of 8 equal semesters, target 6.0. (6.0 x 8 minus 5.3 x 4) / 4 = (48 minus 21.2) / 4 = 6.7. That is the average SGPA needed in each remaining semester.

How a cleared paper is recorded differs between universities, so confirm the rule with your exam section before you plan around it.
