GTU CGPA to percentage follows (CGPA - 0.5) x 10, so a CPI or CGPA of 7.8 equals 73 percent. Gujarat Technological University uses the terms CPI (cumulative performance index) and CGPA for the same overall figure, and the rule applies to both.
Enter your CPI in the GTU CGPA to percentage converter above to get the figure at once. The rule comes from a GTU notification on CPI and CGPA equivalent class, and GTU issues an online conversion certificate if you need proof. GTU's certificate, not any calculator, is the final figure.

CGPA here means your CPI or CGPA from the GTU grade history or final result, on the 10 point scale.
How the GTU CGPA to percentage formula works
The rule has two steps. Take 0.5 away from the CPI, then multiply by 10. Another way to see it: ten times your CPI, minus 5. A CPI of 8.0 is therefore 80 minus 5, or 75 percent. Nothing more than these two steps is needed to convert CGPA to percentage at GTU.
The formula is cited from GTU's notification indicating CPI and CGPA equivalent class. Sources quote different circular numbers for it, but every one of them gives the same minus 0.5 formula. Newer schemes may print a different grade scale, so glance at your result before relying on any table.
- Take the CPI or CGPA from your latest GTU result.
- Subtract 0.5.
- Multiply by 10.
- Check the class bands if a form asks for your class.
Worked examples with GTU CPIs
CPI 7.80. 7.80 - 0.5 = 7.30. 7.30 x 10 = 73.0 percent. First class with distinction, since 7.80 is above 7.1.
CPI 8.45. 8.45 - 0.5 = 7.95, so 79.5 percent.
CPI 6.92. 6.92 - 0.5 = 6.42, so 64.2 percent. First class.
If you only have semester SPIs, first build the CPI with credit weights. For example, SPIs of 7.62, 8.05 and 8.31 over 20, 22 and 24 credits give 528.94 / 66 = 8.01, which converts to (8.01 - 0.5) x 10 = 75.1 percent. Our SGPA to CGPA tool does that step.
GTU percentage table for common CPIs
| CPI or CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|
| 5.00 | 45.0 |
| 5.50 | 50.0 |
| 6.00 | 55.0 |
| 6.50 | 60.0 |
| 7.00 | 65.0 |
| 7.10 | 66.0 |
| 7.50 | 70.0 |
| 8.00 | 75.0 |
| 8.50 | 80.0 |
| 9.00 | 85.0 |
| 9.50 | 90.0 |
| 10.00 | 95.0 |
The highest possible figure is 95 percent, for a perfect 10. Anything between two rows comes out exact in the tool above.
Class from CPI at GTU
GTU's equivalent class is commonly given on CPI, as below. Confirm with your college if your scheme is new.
| Class | CPI needed | Percentage at that CPI |
|---|---|---|
| First class with distinction | 7.1 and above | 66.0 |
| First class | 6.5 to below 7.1 | 60.0 |
| Second class | 5.5 to below 6.5 | 50.0 |
| Pass class | below 5.5 | below 50 |
So distinction at GTU starts at 66 percent after conversion, not 70. Mention the class from your result, not a class you worked out from a different university's bands.
Grades and points on a GTU result
The grade letters below are as commonly published for GTU degree courses. Newer schemes may differ, so go by what your grade history prints.

| 75 to 84 | AB | 9 |
| 65 to 74 | BB | 8 |

Using the GTU converter above and reversing it
Type your CPI, keep the rule on GTU, and the result shows the percentage with the rule beside it. Under it you also get the figures several other rules would produce, handy if an employer applied a different method by mistake. Press Swap direction to go the other way. Percentage to CGPA at GTU is the percentage divided by 10, plus 0.5. So 60 percent is 6.5, and 70 percent is 7.5.
For a CPI from grades rather than SPIs, start with the SGPA calculator for each semester.
GTU CGPA to percentage certificate
GTU issues its conversion certificate online, so you do not need to visit the university for it. Apply online through the GTU website and pay the fee it lists. Keep your final grade history handy, as the details must match.
Placement cells and universities abroad usually want this certificate rather than a converted number. The certificate guide on this site lists papers to send along. To compare GTU with other rules, see CGPA to percentage.
Mistakes students make with GTU CPI
| Slip | Effect | Correct way |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplying CPI by 10 | Adds 5 points too many | Remove 0.5 first, then multiply |
| Converting an SPI as the final figure | Shows one semester only | Convert the CPI |
| Assuming 70 percent for distinction | GTU uses CPI 7.1 | Read the class on your result |
| Using the minus 0.75 rule | That is the MAKAUT and JNTUK rule | Stick to minus 0.5 for GTU |
