Mumbai University CGPA to percentage no longer has a formula for colleges in Arts, Commerce, Science and Management, because the old rule of 7.1 x CGPI + 11 has been repealed, and your college now works out your actual percentage from the marks of all your semesters. If you need it in writing, the university issues a conversion letter on request.
The converter above still shows what the old rule gives, because many earlier documents used it. Engineering students should read the section on the Faculty of Technology below, since the new circular does not clearly cover them. The university and your college decide the final figure.

Total marks are added across every semester of the programme, for example Sem I to Sem VI for a three year degree. The old CGPI rule is shown only for reference.
What changed in the Mumbai University CGPA to percentage rule
For years Mumbai University students converted CGPI with 7.1 x CGPI + 11. The university's Board of Examination and Evaluation has now repealed that rule through a new conversion circular. The two earlier circulars that set out the formula are withdrawn by name.
The new circular is addressed to the colleges and university departments of Arts, Commerce, Science and Management, and it covers the choice based systems (CBGS, CBSGS and their successors). For these students there is no conversion formula at all. The college takes the marks you actually scored in every semester and computes the real percentage. The university issues a conversion letter only when a student asks for one.
- Check which faculty your college falls under.
- For Arts, Commerce, Science or Management, ask the college for your marks based percentage.
- Request the university conversion letter if an employer or university wants proof.
- For engineering, ask the college exam cell which method it applies.
- Do not use any multiplier you found online.
What you should do now, step by step
- Find your faculty. Your mark sheet names it: Arts, Commerce, Science, Management, or Technology for engineering.
- Arts, Commerce, Science or Management: ask your college office for your percentage computed from the marks of all semesters. Keep your mark sheets ready, since they will check against them.
- Need written proof? Apply for the Mumbai University CGPA to percentage conversion letter. A fee may apply, as listed by the university.
- Engineering: ask your college exam cell which method it follows today. Do not assume the repeal applies, and do not assume it does not.
- Filling a form today? If the college figure is not ready yet, write your CGPI and add that the marks based percentage is awaited, rather than inventing a number.
Working out your actual percentage from marks
The marks method is simple arithmetic. Add the marks obtained in every semester, add the maximum marks, divide and multiply by 100.
Suppose a B.Com student's six semester totals are 412, 438, 455, 470, 481 and 499, each out of 600.
Marks obtained: 412 + 438 + 455 + 470 + 481 + 499 = 2,755.
Maximum marks: 6 x 600 = 3,600.
Percentage = 2,755 / 3,600 x 100 = 76.53.
The maximum per semester differs by course, so copy it from each mark sheet. Our marks percentage calculator does this sum for you. The college figure is the one to quote, because it may treat some papers, such as grade only courses, in a way a home sum cannot.
The old formula, for documents that used it
Under the repealed rule, percentage = 7.1 x CGPI + 11. This Mumbai University CGPA to percentage calculator works as a converter for the old rule only, applying it to any CGPI you type. Students who search for MU CGPA to percentage usually want this figure for an old document. Use it to check an older letter, or to compare, but not as your current percentage if your faculty is covered by the new circular.
| CGPI | Old rule result (7.1 x CGPI + 11) |
|---|---|
| 5.00 | 46.50 |
| 5.50 | 50.05 |
| 6.00 | 53.60 |
| 6.50 | 57.15 |
| 7.00 | 60.70 |
| 7.50 | 64.25 |
| 8.00 | 67.80 |
| 8.50 | 71.35 |
| 9.00 | 74.90 |
| 9.50 | 78.45 |
| 10.00 | 82.00 |
CGPI 8.20 under the old rule: 7.1 x 8.20 = 58.22, plus 11 = 69.22 percent.
CGPI 6.40: 7.1 x 6.40 = 45.44, plus 11 = 56.44 percent.
Notice that even a perfect 10 gives only 82 under the old rule. A marks based figure has no such ceiling.
Engineering and the Faculty of Technology
The new circular names Arts, Commerce, Science and Management. It does not clearly say whether engineering colleges are covered. An older engineering specific formula also circulates online, but no official document we found supports it, so it is not printed here.
If you studied B.E. or B.Tech at a Mumbai University college, your exam cell is the right place to ask. Request the method in writing if a recruiter or a foreign university will rely on it.
Multipliers you should ignore
Students often find other Mumbai University formulas on blogs and video channels, with slightly different multipliers. None of them has an official source that we could find. The only formula the university ever published for these faculties was 7.1 x CGPI + 11, and it has now been repealed.
| Approach | Status | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Actual percentage from all semester marks | Current for covered faculties | Ask the college |
| 7.1 x CGPI + 11 | Repealed for covered faculties | Use only to read old documents |
| CGPI x 10 or x 9.5 | Not a Mumbai rule | Ignore |
| Any other multiplier from a website | No official source found | Ignore |
Percentage to CGPA and other Mumbai questions
Some forms ask the other way round. Under the old rule, CGPI = (percentage - 11) / 7.1, so 60 percent was about 6.90. With the new method there is no reverse formula, because the percentage comes from marks, not from the CGPI. Any 10 point CGPA to percentage question for Mumbai University is now answered by your faculty's method above. To combine semester pointers into a CGPI, the SGPA to CGPA page does the weighting.
For how other universities convert, see the CGPA to percentage overview. Pune students should use the SPPU band table, which is quite different.
Questions students ask
What is the Mumbai University CGPA to percentage formula now?
For Arts, Commerce, Science and Management there is no formula now. The college works out the actual percentage from the marks of all semesters, and the university gives a conversion letter on request.
Is 7.1 x CGPI + 11 still valid?
It has been repealed for colleges and departments in Arts, Commerce, Science and Management. It may still appear on older documents. Engineering students should ask their college which method applies.
How to convert my CGPA into percentage for Mumbai University engineering?
The new circular does not clearly cover engineering, and no engineering formula could be verified from an official source. Put the question to your college's exam cell and ask for the method it uses.
How do I get a conversion letter from Mumbai University?
The circular says the university issues it on request. Ask your college how to apply and pay the fee shown by the university.
Can I still use this Mumbai University percentage calculator?
Yes, to see what the old rule gives or to check an older letter. For your current percentage, use the figure your college works out from marks.
What is percentage to CGPA for Mumbai University?
Under the old rule it was (percentage - 11) / 7.1. Under the current method there is no reverse formula because the percentage comes straight from marks.
