This Anna University CGPA calculator multiplies each course's credits by its grade point (O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5) and divides the total by the credits you registered, which is exactly how regulation 2021 works out GPA and CGPA. A semester with 154.5 credit points over 17.5 credits gives a GPA of 8.83.
It works for affiliated engineering colleges and university departments, and for postgraduate students whose grade sheet uses the same letters. Your consolidated grade sheet from the university is the final word, so use this tool to plan and check, then match the figure printed by the Controller of Examinations.

GPA = Σ(Ci x GPi) / ΣCi
Ci is the credit value of course i and GPi is the grade point for the letter you got in it. CGPA uses the same sum over every semester so far.
How to use the Anna University CGPA calculator above
Add one row per course. Type the credits from your syllabus book (theory papers are usually 3 or 4, labs often 1.5 or 2) and choose the letter grade shown in your result. The tool fills in the grade point, multiplies, and prints your semester GPA in the result panel along with total credits and total credit points.
For the overall figure, switch to the semester view and enter each semester's GPA with the credits you earned in it. The panel then shows CGPA and the matching percentage at CGPA x 10. If you only have your GPA from the results portal, that is enough for this mode.
On the day Anna University results are published, the CGPA calculator updates your record in a minute. For example, after sem 2 the Anna University CGPA calculator takes the two GPAs with their credits, so you see where you stand before the grade sheet reaches college.
- Open your semester result or grade sheet.
- Note the credits of each course from the curriculum.
- Turn every letter into its grade point.
- Multiply credits by grade point for each course.
- Add the products and divide by total credits.
- Repeat across semesters to get CGPA.
Grade points used by the GPA calculator for Anna University
Under regulation 2021 the university uses absolute grading for labs, projects and any course where 30 or fewer students pass. When more than 30 students pass a course, relative grading (a normalisation method) decides where the letter cut-offs fall, so the marks bands below may shift. The grade point attached to each letter never changes, and that is all the calculator needs.
| Letter on the sheet | Marks band | Points |
|---|---|---|
| O | 91 to 100 | 10 |
| A+ | 81 to 90 | 9 |
| A | 71 to 80 | 8 |
| B+ | 61 to 70 | 7 |
| B | 56 to 60 | 6 |
| C | 50 to 55 | 5 |
| U | below 50 | 0 (reappear) |
A U grade means you must reappear. It is not averaged into your GPA while it stands.
Worked example: one semester GPA
Here is a sample semester with four theory courses and two labs.
| Paper | Credits | Letter | Points per credit | Product |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 (theory) | 4.0 | A+ | 9 | 36.0 |
| Course 2 (theory) | 4.0 | O | 10 | 40.0 |
| Course 3 (theory) | 3.0 | A | 8 | 24.0 |
| Course 4 (theory) | 3.0 | B+ | 7 | 21.0 |
| Laboratory 1 | 2.0 | O | 10 | 20.0 |
| Laboratory 2 | 1.5 | A+ | 9 | 13.5 |
| Total | 17.5 | 154.5 |
GPA = 154.5 / 17.5 = 8.828, shown as 8.83.
Now suppose Course 4 had come out as U instead of B+. You drop its 3 credits and 21 credit points, so the GPA becomes 133.5 / 14.5 = 9.21. The GPA looks higher, but that course is still pending, and the class you finally get depends on clearing it on time.
GPA to CGPA calculator for Anna University: joining semesters
CGPA is the same credit weighted average, taken over every course you have passed so far. If you know each semester's GPA and credits, multiply them, add, and divide by total credits.
| Semester | Credits earned | GPA | GPA x credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 20 | 8.2 | 164.0 |
| 2 | 26 | 7.4 | 192.4 |
| 3 | 22 | 8.9 | 195.8 |
| Total | 68 | 552.2 |
CGPA = 552.2 / 68 = 8.1206, shown as 8.12. A simple average of 8.20, 7.40 and 8.90 would give 8.17, which is wrong because semester 2 carried more credits.
The SGPA to CGPA tool does this one step for any university, and the overall CGPA calculator handles a full four year record.
Which class your CGPA earns
| Class | CGPA needed | Extra condition |
|---|---|---|
| First Class with Distinction | 8.50 or above | No course needed a second attempt, all done inside 5 years (one authorised break is allowed), never prevented for want of attendance |
| First Class | 6.50 to 8.49 (or higher without distinction conditions) | All courses passed within 5 years |
| Second Class | Below 6.50 | Everyone else who completes the degree |
Two students can both finish at 8.60, yet only the one who never had a U grade or attendance shortage gets distinction. Plan your reappearances early, since a late clear can cost you the higher class even when the number is high enough.
Slips that spoil an Anna GPA
| Slip | What goes wrong | Better habit |
|---|---|---|
| Taking a plain average of all grade points | A 4 credit course weighs more than a 1.5 credit lab | Multiply each grade point by its credits first |
| Counting a U grade as zero inside GPA | R2021 leaves U courses out of GPA and CGPA until cleared | Skip the U course; add it after you pass it |
| Averaging semester GPAs for CGPA | Semesters carry different credit loads | Weight each GPA by its credits, as the tool does |
| Adding the honours or minor course before it is finished | Those credits count only once the honours or minor is complete | Leave them out until the extra programme is done |
| Assuming marks bands are fixed for theory papers | Relative grading is used when more than 30 students pass a course | Read the letter on your grade sheet, not your raw marks |
Where each number comes from
- Credits: the curriculum and syllabus PDF of your branch, or the credits column of the grade sheet.
- Letter grades: the semester result on the university results page, or the printed grade sheet.
- Semester GPA: printed at the foot of each grade sheet.
- Final CGPA and class: the consolidated grade sheet issued after the last semester.
For the rule itself, read the regulation 2021 PDF on the university's academic courses site. If you joined under regulation 2017, the method is reported to be the same, but check your own regulation book for its bands.
Questions students ask
How do I calculate GPA in Anna University?
Multiply the credits of each course by the grade point of your letter, add those products, then split the sum over all registered credits. A U grade course is left out until you pass it.
Is there a GPA calculator for Anna University regulation 2021?
Yes, the calculator on this page uses the regulation 2021 grade points: O 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6 and C 5. Enter credits and letters, and it shows the semester GPA.
Does the CGPA calculator for Anna University work for regulation 2025?
The method of credits times grade points is standard, so the tool still gives a useful estimate. A newer regulation can change bands or grade points, so compare the letter list in your own regulation book before you rely on the number.
How does the overall CGPA calculator for Anna University work?
Overall CGPA averages every passed course, weighted by credits, across all semesters. You can also weight each semester GPA by that semester's credits and divide by total credits.
Is there an Anna University SGPA calculator?
Anna University calls the semester figure GPA, which other universities call SGPA. The calculator above gives that semester figure from credits and grades.
Can the Anna University MBA CGPA calculator use the same grades?
Postgraduate programmes such as MBA use their own regulation book. If your grade sheet shows the same letters and points, the tool works; if the letters differ, choose the grade points printed on your sheet.
Why does my GPA on the portal differ from my own working?
Usually a credit value was typed wrong or a U grade was counted as zero. Check the credits column of the grade sheet and remove any course still marked U.
