The VIT CGPA calculator above weights every grade point (S 10, A 9, B 8, C 7, D 6, E 5, F 0, N 0) by the course credits and then averages over all credits registered, which is the method VIT itself uses for GPA and CGPA. To convert, VIT's own regulations say percentage equals CGPA x 10, so a CGPA of 8.75 is 87.5 percent.
It works the same for VIT Vellore, VIT Chennai, VIT AP and VIT Bhopal, which share the FFCS regulations. Pick your grades course by course for one semester, or switch to the semester tab and enter each GPA with its credits to get your CGPA.

Credits are the course credits printed in your grade history. Grade points come from the VIT letter grade. F and N count with 0 points in the credits you registered.
VIT grade points and how grades are given
VIT uses letter grades with fixed points. The table shows the absolute bands used for labs, projects and classes of 10 or fewer students.
| Grade | Grade point | Absolute band (marks) |
|---|---|---|
| S | 10 | 90 and above |
| A | 9 | 80 to 89 |
| B | 8 | 70 to 79 |
| C | 7 | 60 to 69 |
| D | 6 | 55 to 59 |
| E | 5 | 50 to 54 |
| F | 0 | Below 50 |
| N | 0 | Debarred for attendance |
Theory classes with more than 10 students use relative grading. The class mean becomes the middle of the B band, S needs at least the mean plus 1.5 standard deviations and at least 90 marks, and the pass floor stays at 50. So two students with 78 marks in different classes can get different grades. Note that E is worth 5, not 4.
- Open your grade history on VTOP and pick one semester.
- For each course, enter the credits and choose the letter grade.
- Read the GPA in the result panel.
- For CGPA, switch to the semester tab and enter each GPA with that semester's credits.
- Multiply the CGPA by 10 for the percentage the regulations allow.
How the VIT CGPA calculator works
The first tab, SGPA from grades, is for one semester. VIT calls this the GPA. Add a row for each course in your grade history, type its credits, choose its grade, and the panel shows the GPA, total credits, total credit points and the x 10 percentage.
The second tab, CGPA from semesters, takes each semester's GPA and the credits you registered that semester. It weights each GPA by its credits, which gives the same answer as adding every course together. Use it for a VIT CGPA calculator semester wise view after each result.
If you only want a marks based guess before results, the grade bands above let you turn expected marks into a grade, but relative grading in large theory classes means the real grade can move up or down.
Worked example: one semester GPA
| Course | Credits | Grade | Credits x points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus | 4 | S | 40 |
| Engineering Physics | 3 | A | 27 |
| Problem Solving and Programming | 4 | B | 32 |
| Technical English | 2 | C | 14 |
| Physics Lab | 1 | S | 10 |
| Chemistry | 3 | E | 15 |
Total credits = 17. Total credit points = 138. GPA = 138 / 17 = 8.12. Percentage = 8.12 x 10 = 81.2.
Now suppose a fifth theory course of 3 credits came back as F. Credits become 20, points stay 138, and the GPA drops to 138 / 20 = 6.90. One failed course costs more than a full grade point.
Worked example: CGPA across semesters
Semester 1: 17 credits, 138 credit points (GPA 8.12). Semester 2: 23 credits, 196 credit points (GPA 8.52).
CGPA = (138 + 196) / (17 + 23) = 334 / 40 = 8.35. Percentage = 83.5.
Averaging 8.12 and 8.52 directly gives 8.32. That understates the result, since the second term had six extra credits.
VIT counts each course once in the CGPA even if you repeated it. Pass/fail (P grade), audit, minor and honours courses are left out, so do not add them to the calculator.
VIT CGPA to percentage conversion table
Section 9.10 of the FFCS academic regulations gives the percentage equivalent as CGPA x 10. The Controller of Examinations issues an equivalence certificate when a college or employer asks for one.
| VIT CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|
| 6.00 | 60.0 |
| 6.50 | 65.0 |
| 7.00 | 70.0 |
| 7.50 | 75.0 |
| 7.80 | 78.0 |
| 8.00 | 80.0 |
| 8.25 | 82.5 |
| 8.50 | 85.0 |
| 8.75 | 87.5 |
| 9.00 | 90.0 |
| 9.25 | 92.5 |
| 9.50 | 95.0 |
VIT does not print a first class or distinction on the degree certificate or consolidated grade sheet. Where an application wants a class, write the CGPA and the percentage, and attach the equivalence certificate.
Errors that throw off a VIT GPA
| Error | Why it matters | Correct way |
|---|---|---|
| Using 4 for an E grade | E is 5 at VIT | Pick E from the VIT scale |
| Leaving out F or N courses | They count with 0 points in registered credits | Include them |
| Simple average of semester GPAs | Semesters rarely carry equal credits | Use the semester tab with credits filled in |
| Adding audit or P grade courses | They are excluded from GPA | Leave them out |
| Using a 9.5 multiplier | That is the CBSE school rule | Use CGPA x 10 for VIT |
VIT campuses, VIT Pune and other universities
VIT Vellore, VIT Chennai, VIT AP and VIT Bhopal follow the FFCS regulations, so this one tool works as a VIT Bhopal GPA calculator, a VITAP CGPA calculator, a VIT Chennai CGPA calculator and the Vellore version alike. Newer admits are on a later version of the regulations, which we have not read, so check your handbook for any change. Students searching for VIT Pune should note that it is Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, a separate college whose conversion rule is not covered here.
Compare with the SRM CGPA calculator, which also uses CGPA x 10, the CGPA to percentage converter for other universities, or the SGPA to CGPA tool if you only have semester figures. Keep an eye on attendance too with the VIT attendance calculator, since an N grade pulls the GPA down.
Questions students ask
How is CGPA calculated in VIT?
VIT builds the CGPA from course level data: a 4 credit S adds 40 points, a 3 credit B adds 24, and the grand total of points is shared out over every credit you registered. F and N count with 0 points. Audit, P grade, minor and honours courses are left out.
How do I convert VIT CGPA to percentage?
Multiply the CGPA by 10. The FFCS regulations give this rule, so 8.75 becomes 87.5 percent. The CoE gives an equivalence certificate on request.
What is the grade point of E in VIT?
E is 5 on the VIT scale. Some calculators wrongly use 4, which lowers your GPA.
Does this work as a VIT AP GPA calculator or for VIT Bhopal?
Yes. VIT AP, VIT Bhopal and VIT Chennai use the same FFCS grade points and the same x 10 conversion.
Does VIT give first class or distinction?
No class is printed on the degree or consolidated grade sheet. Only the CGPA appears, which you can convert with CGPA x 10.
Can I calculate VIT CGPA semester wise?
Yes. Use the semester tab, enter each semester GPA with its credits, and the calculator gives a credit weighted CGPA.
