A VIT attendance calculator has one job: keep every course at 75 percent or above, because a student who falls under 75 percent in a course is barred from its Final Assessment Test (FAT) and receives an N grade for it. 74 percent is not enough, and there is no condonation band like other colleges have.
The tool above is set to 75. Enter the attended and total classes of one course from VTOP and you will see your percentage, how many classes you can still afford to miss, or how many you need back to back to recover.

How the VIT attendance rule works
VIT applies attendance course by course. Each registered course in your timetable has its own count, and the portal applies the debar automatically to any course under 75 percent before the FAT. Your other courses are not affected.
| Attendance in the course | FAT | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| 75 percent or more | Allowed | Graded as usual |
| Below 75 percent, even 74.9 | Barred | N, which carries 0 grade points |
You may hear that students with a CGPA of 9 or more get some relaxation outside lab courses. We could not confirm this, so do not plan on it. The rule above is consistent across many reports, but we could not read the official attendance regulation, so the academic office has the final word.
- Log in to VTOP and open the attendance page for the current semester.
- For one course, note attended classes and total classes.
- Type them into the calculator; the target stays at 75.
- Add the classes left until the last instructional day for a full term view.
- Repeat for each theory and lab component that VTOP lists.
Filling in the VIT attendance calculator from VTOP
VTOP shows a row per course with attended classes, total classes and a percentage. Copy the two counts into the first two boxes. When a course has a theory part and a lab part listed as separate rows, treat each row as its own calculation.
For the classes left box, count the slots of that course on your timetable from today to the last instructional day, leaving out declared holidays. The calculator then shows how many of those you must attend and the highest percentage open to you by the end of the term.
The answer is the same on every campus that uses this rule, so the same page serves as a VIT Chennai attendance calculator, a VITAP attendance calculator for Amaravati students, and a tool for Vellore and Bhopal. If your campus has issued a different notice, change the target box.
VIT attendance examples you can check
Can I skip a few? 40 attended out of 50.
80 percent. Skip count = floor(40 / 0.75 - 50) = floor(53.33 - 50) = 3. After three absences you would be at 40 / 53 = 75.47 percent. A fourth makes it 40 / 54 = 74.07 percent, which means a FAT debar.
Slightly short. 33 attended out of 45.
73.33 percent, so you would be barred if attendance closed today. Classes needed = 3 x 45 minus 4 x 33 = 135 minus 132 = 3. Then 36 / 48 = 75 percent.
Early in the term. 20 attended out of 30, with 30 classes left.
66.67 percent right now. Term total = 60, and 75 percent of 60 is 45, so you need 25 of the remaining 30. Best possible = 50 / 60 = 83.33 percent. You can still afford 5 absences, but only 5.
Absence budget for common VIT course sizes
Courses meet a different number of times depending on credits and slots. Find the total classes your course will have and read the budget.
| Total classes in the course | Must attend | Absences allowed |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | 12 | 3 |
| 30 | 23 | 7 |
| 45 | 34 | 11 |
| 60 | 45 | 15 |
| 75 | 57 | 18 |
| 90 | 68 | 22 |
A short lab with 15 sessions leaves just 3 absences, so one week of illness can finish it. Always spend absences on the larger theory courses first.
What an N grade does to your record
N means the course was debarred for attendance. On the VIT grade scale both F and N carry 0 grade points, so the course earns no credit this semester. Read how your GPA is affected on the VIT CGPA calculator page, and ask your proctor how and when you can register the course again.
Because there is no condonation band at VIT, the only real protection is a cushion. Try to stay at 80 percent or more in every course through the middle of the semester, which leaves room for genuine illness near the FAT.
VIT attendance slip ups
| Slip up | Result | Safer habit |
|---|---|---|
| Thinking 74.5 will be rounded | The portal debars anything under 75 | Stay a few classes above the line |
| Checking only theory rows | A lab row can be debarred on its own | Track each VTOP row |
| Using up all absences before CAT 2 | No room left near the FAT | Keep at least two in hand |
| Counting on a CGPA relaxation | Not confirmed, and not for labs | Plan as if 75 is fixed |
Compare VIT with other colleges
VIT is strict about the cut off but asks for the common 75. KL University asks for 85, with a condonation band from 75. SRM uses 75 with condonation down to 65. See the KL attendance page, the SRM attendance page and the main attendance calculator for any other target.
Questions students ask
What is the attendance requirement at VIT?
75 percent in every registered course. Below that you are barred from the FAT of that course and get an N grade.
Is 74 percent attendance allowed in VIT?
No. Reports agree that 74 percent counts as short, and there is no condonation band. Keep a cushion above 75.
How many classes can I bunk in VIT?
Use floor(attended / 0.75 - total). With 40 out of 50 you can miss 3 more. In a 45 class course you can miss 11 in total.
Does the VIT AP attendance calculator use the same rule?
The 75 percent per course rule is reported across VIT campuses, including VIT AP, Chennai and Bhopal. If your campus notice says otherwise, change the target.
What is the N grade in VIT?
N marks a course debarred for low attendance. It carries 0 grade points on the VIT scale, the same as F.
Do VIT students with a high CGPA get attendance relaxation?
Some students say a CGPA of 9 or more brings relaxation outside labs, but we could not confirm it. Plan with the 75 percent rule.
