The KL attendance calculator above starts at 85 percent, because KL University requires 85 percent attendance in each course to write the semester end exam. A course that ends between 75 and 85 percent is forgiven only with medical or other documents, and below 75 percent the course is detained.
This is stricter than the 75 percent most colleges use, so a KLU student who feels safe at 78 percent is actually in the danger zone. Type the attended and conducted figures for one course from the KL ERP, and the tool shows how many classes you can skip or must attend to stay clear.

KL University attendance rule at a glance
KL Education Foundation (KLEF) publishes its rule on the official attendance page. The three bands below apply to each course on its own, not to your overall average.
| Your attendance in a course | Status | What you need to do |
|---|---|---|
| 85 percent or more | Eligible | Nothing, you can sit the semester end exam |
| 75 to below 85 percent | Condonable | Apply with medical certificates, case file or other proof |
| Below 75 percent | Detained | No relaxation; the course has to be redone |
Law students (BBA LLB, LLB and LLM) have a lower bar: 70 percent to be eligible, 65 to 70 percent condonable, and detention below 65. The most KLU will ever condone is 10 percentage points, given for medical reasons or for representing KLEF, the state or the country.
- Log in to the KL ERP and open the attendance register for one course.
- Copy the attended and conducted numbers into the calculator.
- Keep the target at 85, or set 70 if you are in BBA LLB, LLB or LLM.
- Count the remaining periods of that course from your timetable and type them in.
- Repeat for every course, since KLU checks each one separately.
Using the KL attendance calculator with your ERP numbers
In the KL ERP attendance view each course shows the classes conducted and the classes you attended, often with a percentage beside them. Type those two figures into the first two boxes. The target is already 85.
The fourth box, classes left, is where your KL time table and attendance calculator planning meet. Count how many more periods that course has before the last instruction day. Count a lab block as the number of periods the ERP adds for it, which is often more than one. The result then shows the fewest present marks you still need from those periods and the highest figure you can still reach. Used this way, the KL timetable and attendance calculator together give you a plan for the whole semester.
A green Safe label means you are at or above the target you typed. A red Short label with a classes in a row figure means you are below it right now. Because 85 is high, recovery is slow: each absence takes about six present classes to undo near the line.
Worked KLU examples
Comfortable. 68 attended out of 76 conducted.
68 / 76 x 100 = 89.47 percent. Skip allowance = floor(68 / 0.85 - 76) = floor(80 - 76) = 4. After four absences you would sit at 68 out of 80, exactly 85 percent.
In the condonation band. 50 attended out of 60.
50 / 60 x 100 = 83.33 percent, which needs documents today. To clear 85 without help: ceil((0.85 x 60 - 50) / 0.15) = ceil(1 / 0.15) = ceil(6.67) = 7. Check: 57 / 67 = 85.07 percent, while 56 / 66 = 84.85 percent falls short.
Low, with classes left. 40 attended out of 56, and 24 periods remain.
Now 71.43 percent, under the detention line. Term total = 80. For 85 percent you would need 68 present, but 40 + 24 = 64, so 85 is out of reach. For 75 percent you need 60, so attend at least 20 of the 24. Best possible = 64 / 80 = 80 percent, which still sits in the condonation band.
Law student, 70 percent rule. 35 attended out of 52.
35 / 52 = 67.31 percent, inside the 65 to 70 condonable band. Needed = ceil((0.70 x 52 - 35) / 0.30) = ceil(1.4 / 0.30) = 5. Then 40 / 57 = 70.18 percent.
85 percent planning table for a full course
If you know the total periods a course will have this semester, read across. The 75 percent columns show where the detention line sits, so you can see how thin the condonation cushion is.
| Periods in the course | Attend for 85 percent | Absences allowed at 85 | Attend for 75 percent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 17 | 3 | 15 |
| 30 | 26 | 4 | 23 |
| 40 | 34 | 6 | 30 |
| 50 | 43 | 7 | 38 |
| 60 | 51 | 9 | 45 |
| 70 | 60 | 10 | 53 |
| 80 | 68 | 12 | 60 |
| 90 | 77 | 13 | 68 |
| 100 | 85 | 15 | 75 |
| 120 | 102 | 18 | 90 |
A 40 period elective gives you only 6 absences for the whole semester. Two days of fever with a lab on one of them can use half of that.
How condonation works at KLU
If a course ends between 75 and 85 percent, you can ask for the shortage to be condoned. KLEF accepts medical or unavoidable reasons, backed by medical certificates, a hospital case file and any other supporting papers. Representing KLEF, the state or the country also counts.
- Collect papers at the time of the illness, not at the end of term.
- Submit through your counsellor or department in the window the university announces.
- Remember the ceiling: no more than 10 percentage points can ever be condoned, and nothing below 75.
Condonation is a decision by the university, not a right. This calculator only shows the arithmetic; the attendance section of KLU decides the final status.
Mistakes KLU students make with attendance
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Planning with a 75 percent attendance calculator | 75 is only the condonation floor at KL | Keep the target at 85 |
| Looking at the overall ERP average | Detention is decided course by course | Check every course, weakest first |
| Skipping the classes allowed on day one | No room is left for later illness | Hold back at least two absences |
| Assuming documents fix anything | Below 75 there is no relaxation at all | Act while you are still above 75 |
| Law students using 85 | Their rule is 70 with 65 as the floor | Type 70 in the target box |
Questions students ask
What attendance does KL University require?
85 percent in each course to sit the semester end exam. Between 75 and 85 percent the shortage may be condoned with documents. Law programmes need 70 percent.
What happens if my KLU attendance is below 75 percent?
You are detained in that course and there is no relaxation. You will have to complete the course again as the university directs.
How do I use the KLU attendance calculator with the ERP?
Open the attendance section of the KL ERP, pick a course and copy attended and conducted into the calculator. Leave the target at 85 and add the periods left from your timetable.
How many KLU classes can I skip at 85 percent?
Use floor(attended / 0.85 - held). With 68 out of 76 you can miss 4 more. In a course of 60 periods you can miss 9 in total.
Is the 85 percent rule the same for law students at KL?
No. BBA LLB, LLB and LLM need 70 percent, with 65 to 70 condonable and detention below 65. Type 70 in the target box.
How much attendance can KLU condone?
At most 10 percentage points, for medical reasons or for representing KLEF, the state or the country, with supporting documents.
