GPA to Percentage Calculator and Conversion Guide

CGPA & SGPA4.0 and 10 pointEstimateChecked Nov 2026

GPA to percentage on the 4.0 scale is usually estimated as GPA divided by 4 times 100, so a 3.2 GPA reads as 80 percent. On the common band table, though, 3.2 sits between the 3.0 band (70 to 74 percent) and the 3.3 band (75 to 79), so the two methods can be far apart.

When the GPA is out of 10, as with an Indian SGPA or CGPA, use your university's own rule instead; most multiply by 10 or 9.5. This page covers the 4.0 formula, how to read the band table backwards, the Indian 10 point rules, letter grade to percentage, and test score percentages, with worked numbers for each.

At a glance

  • 4.0 scale

    Percentage = GPA / 4 x 100 (straight estimate)
  • 3.2 GPA

    80% straight; between the 70 to 74 and 75 to 79 bands
  • 10 point scale

    Use your university rule: x 10, x 9.5, or minus 0.5 or 0.75 then x 10
  • Letter grades

Map to a marks range from the grade table, not a single figure
  • Status

4.0 conversions are estimates; no official formula
  • Final figure

    Your university or evaluator

Percentage = GPA / 4 x 100 (4.0 scale, straight estimate)

For a 10 point GPA there is no single formula; each university publishes its own conversion rule.

GPA to percentage: the straight scale formula

On a 4.0 scale the simplest conversion treats 4.0 as 100 percent and scales down evenly. A 3.6 GPA gives 90 percent, a 2.8 gives 70 and a 3.45 gives 86.25.

This is plain arithmetic, not a rule any US college or Indian university publishes. For strong GPAs it reads well above the band table, as the examples below show. Use it as a rough guide, and say on any form that the figure is a converted estimate.

Using the GPA to percentage calculator

Open the GPA (4) tab and type your GPA, for example 3.42. The result shows three things: the straight scale percentage, its value rescaled to 10 (GPA x 2.5), and where it falls on the band table, given as the percentage that band starts at.

If you have an Indian 10 point CGPA instead, use the CGPA tab on this tool for a 4.0 estimate, or let the CGPA to percentage tool apply your own university's conversion. To turn a GPA into percentage the calculator needs nothing else. A GPA calculator from percentage works the other way round and is on our percentage to GPA page.

Reading a 4.0 GPA on the band table

The band table used across this site turns Indian percentages into a 4.0 GPA. Read backwards, each GPA step points to a percentage range rather than one number. The last column adds the straight scale reading so you can compare.

GPA to percentage: band ranges and straight reading
GPALetterBand range (%)Straight (%)
4.0A85 to 100100
3.7A-80 to 8492.5
3.3B+75 to 7982.5
3.0B70 to 7475
2.7B-65 to 6967.5
2.3C+60 to 6457.5
2.0C55 to 5950
1.7C-50 to 5442.5
1.3D+45 to 4932.5
1.0D40 to 4425
0.0FBelow 400

Treat this table as a habit of the trade rather than a rule; some sources start 4.0 at 90 percent.

Straight scale or band table: worked examples

GPA 3.7. Straight: 3.7 / 4 x 100 = 92.5. Band table: 80 to 84 percent. The straight scale is about 8 to 12 points higher.

GPA 3.0. Straight: 75. Band table: 70 to 74.

GPA 2.3. Straight: 57.5. Band table: 60 to 64. Here the band reading is higher than the straight one.

The two lines cross, so neither is always higher. When an institution gives its own rule, use it in place of both.

Indian GPA out of 10 to percentage

An SGPA or CGPA out of 10 converts by the rule your university writes in its regulations. Here is an SGPA of 8.4 under each common rule.

SGPA 8.4 to percentage by university rule
RulePercentage
x 10 (VIT, SRM, AKTU, KTU, Anna University, VTU 2022 scheme)84
x 9.5 (CBSE, Delhi University)79.8
(SGPA - 0.75) x 10 (VTU 2018 scheme, MAKAUT, JNTUK)76.5
(SGPA - 0.5) x 10 (JNTUH, GTU, BPUT)79

SPPU uses a band table and Mumbai University has moved several faculties to actual marks, so check those pages separately. For a single semester see SGPA to percentage.

Grade to percentage: letters and grade points

A letter grade on an Indian grade card stands for a marks range, so it converts to a range, not one percentage. Anna University's R2021 absolute grading is a good example.

Anna University R2021: grade to marks range
GradeGrade pointMarks
O1091 to 100
A+981 to 90
A871 to 80
B+761 to 70
B656 to 60
C550 to 55
U0Below 50

So no grade to percentage calculator can tell you whether an A+ was 82 or 89. A grade point to percentage calculator only gives the band. The same limit applies to any grades to percentage calculator or grade points to percentage calculator, and to a grade into percentage calculator. For board grades like IGCSE, the grade boundaries are set for each exam session, so a letter cannot be tied to a fixed percentage either.

Test and exam grade percentage

Many people looking for a grade percentage calculator simply want the percentage of a test score. That is marks obtained divided by maximum marks, times 100. A score of 43 out of 60 gives 43 / 60 x 100 = 71.67 percent.

For a whole mark sheet with several subjects, add the marks and the maximums first, then divide. The marks percentage calculator here handles that, and then a percentage to grade calculator step needs your institution's grade table.

Questions students ask

How do you convert GPA into percentage?

On the 4.0 scale, take the GPA over 4, then times 100, for a straight estimate: 3.4 gives 85 percent. For a 10 point GPA, use your university's rule.

What is a 3.5 GPA in percentage?

87.5 percent on the straight scale. On the band table it lies between the 3.3 band (75 to 79) and the 3.7 band (80 to 84).

What is 8 GPA in percentage?

Read as a 10 point figure, 8 gives 80 percent by x 10, 76 under x 9.5, 72.5 under the VTU 2018 scheme and 75 under GTU. An 8 cannot be a 4.0 scale GPA.

Is there an official GPA to percentage formula?

Not for the 4.0 scale. For 10 point GPAs, each Indian university publishes its own rule, and the certificate it issues carries the figure to use.

How do I convert grade points to percentage?

Find the marks range for that grade in your university's grade table. Grade point 8 at Anna University, for example, means 71 to 80 marks.

Can a grade calculator give my exact percentage?

Only if you have the marks. A letter grade stands for a range, so the exact percentage needs the marks from the mark sheet.
