The SRM attendance calculator above checks each course against 75 percent, the figure SRM IST asks for in every theory and practical course before the end semester exam. If a course sits between 65 and 74 percent the shortage can be condoned with authorised medical or on duty leave, and below 65 percent you are debarred from that course and must register for it again.
Copy the hours conducted and hours attended for one course from the SRM student portal, and the tool tells you whether you are clear, how many more hours you can miss, or how many you must sit through without a break.

SRM attendance rule, band by band
SRM IST follows the UGC 75 percent norm course by course. The bands below are how the rule is widely reported by students and in a court case that involved an SRM student, where the UGC 75 percent rule with a 10 percent condonation cap was applied. We could not read the regulation itself, so treat your department notice as final.
| Course attendance | Result | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 75 percent and above | Eligible for the end semester exam | Keep a margin |
| 65 to 74 percent | Shortage may be condoned | Submit approved medical or on duty leave |
| Below 65 percent | Debarred from the course | Register for the course again |
- Open the attendance section of the SRM portal and pick one course code.
- Note hours conducted and hours attended. If it shows hours absent, subtract absent from conducted.
- Type both numbers into the calculator above and keep the target at 75.
- Add the hours left in the semester for that course if you want a term end view.
- Check the next weakest course the same way.
What to type into the SRM attendance calculator
The SRM portal lists each course with its code, the hours conducted and your attendance. Use those numbers directly.
- Classes attended: hours you were marked present. If the screen shows hours absent instead, take conducted minus absent.
- Classes held: hours conducted so far in that course.
- Target: 75. Type 65 if you want to see how far you are from the debar line.
- Classes left: remaining hours of that course in your slot timetable until instruction ends.
The result gives your percentage, a Safe or Short label, and either the hours you may skip or the hours you need without a gap. Practical courses count separately from theory, so a lab you keep missing can block you even if the theory is fine.
SRM attendance worked out for four students
Room to spare. 58 of 70 hours.
58 / 70 x 100 = 82.86 percent. Skip allowance = floor(58 / 0.75 - 70) = floor(77.33 - 70) = 7. After 7 absences: 58 / 77 = 75.32 percent. An eighth would make it 58 / 78 = 74.36 percent.
Just under. 36 of 50 hours.
72 percent, so condonation territory. Hours needed = 3 x 50 minus 4 x 36 = 150 minus 144 = 6. After that: 42 / 56 = 75 percent.
Near the debar line. 30 of 48 hours.
62.5 percent. To reach 65: ceil((0.65 x 48 - 30) / 0.35) = ceil(1.2 / 0.35) = 4, giving 34 / 52 = 65.38 percent. To reach 75: 3 x 48 minus 4 x 30 = 24, giving 54 / 72 = 75 percent.
Same student, 20 hours left.
Term total = 68. For 75 percent you need 51 present, but 30 + 20 = 50, so 75 is no longer possible. For 65 percent you need 44.2, rounded up to 45, so attend at least 15 of the 20. Best possible = 50 / 68 = 73.53 percent, which keeps you eligible only through condonation.
Hours you can miss in an SRM course
Read your course total from the timetable. The middle column is your bunk budget at 75 percent; the last column shows the absolute floor at 65.
| Hours in the course | Attend for 75 percent | Can miss at 75 | Attend for 65 percent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 15 | 5 | 13 |
| 30 | 23 | 7 | 20 |
| 40 | 30 | 10 | 26 |
| 50 | 38 | 12 | 33 |
| 60 | 45 | 15 | 39 |
| 70 | 53 | 17 | 46 |
| 80 | 60 | 20 | 52 |
| 90 | 68 | 22 | 59 |
| 100 | 75 | 25 | 65 |
| 120 | 90 | 30 | 78 |
Condonation with medical or on duty leave
The 65 to 74 band is meant for genuine absences. Two kinds of leave are usually accepted:
- Medical leave, with a certificate from a registered doctor or hospital papers, submitted soon after you return.
- On duty leave, for events, sports, placement drives or club work the department approved, with a letter from the faculty in charge.
Leave that was never entered on the portal, or papers handed in after the deadline, often do not count. Keep copies and check that the portal shows the leave as approved. The department and the university decide each case, and this calculator only shows the numbers.
SRM AP and other SRM campuses
This page is written for SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRM IST), whatever campus your department sits on. SRM University AP is a separate university with its own academic rules, so an SRM AP attendance calculator user should confirm the minimum and the condonation band in the SRM AP handbook. The tool works for any figure: just type it in the target box.
SRM Valliammai and SRM Easwari students study in Anna University affiliated colleges, so ask the college office for the attendance rule that applies there rather than relying on the SRM IST bands.
Avoidable SRM attendance errors
| Error | Effect | What works |
|---|---|---|
| Reading only the overall portal figure | One weak course can still be debarred | Check every course code |
| Treating a lab as optional | Practical courses carry the same 75 percent rule | Track lab hours on their own |
| Leave not uploaded | The portal still shows you absent | Confirm the leave status before exams |
| Relying on 65 as the target | Condonation is not automatic | Plan for 75 and use 65 only as a warning line |
For other colleges see the general attendance calculator, the VIT version or the stricter KL University version. For grades, the SRM CGPA calculator uses the SRM grade points.
Questions students ask
What is the minimum attendance in SRM?
75 percent in each theory and practical course to write the end semester exam. Shortages between 65 and 74 percent may be condoned with approved medical or on duty leave.
What happens below 65 percent attendance in SRM?
You are debarred from that course and must register for it again. Condonation does not reach below 65 percent.
How do I use the attendance calculator SRM students need with portal hours?
Type hours attended and hours conducted for one course. If the portal shows hours absent, subtract them from conducted to get attended.
How many hours do I need to reach 75 percent in SRM?
Use 3 x conducted minus 4 x attended. With 36 of 50 hours that is 6 hours in a row.
Does on duty leave count as attendance in SRM?
Approved on duty leave is used to condone a shortage in the 65 to 74 band. Make sure it is recorded on the portal before the exam.
Is the rule the same at SRM AP?
SRM University AP is a separate university, so check its own handbook. You can still use this calculator by typing its minimum in the target box.
