A marks to CGPA calculator gives a quick CGPA by turning marks into a percentage and dividing by 9.5, so 412 out of 500 is 82.4 percent and a CGPA of about 8.67 (or 8.24 if you divide by 10). Type your marks and the total in the calculator above to see both figures at once.
That shortcut is an estimate. Your real CGPA is built from the grade you earn in each subject and its credits, and the gap can be large. The exact method below takes subject marks through your university's grade bands, and it is the one to trust when the result will go on a form.

Printed in your university's regulations
CGPA (estimate) = (Marks / Total x 100) / 9.5
Marks are the marks you obtained and Total is the maximum. Dividing by 10 instead of 9.5 gives the estimate for universities that use a x 10 rule.
Using the marks to CGPA calculator
Enter Marks you got, for example 412, and Total marks, which starts at 500. The tool first finds your percentage, then divides it by 9.5 for the main figure. Under it you see the percentage divided by 10 and the plain percentage, then use whichever matches your university. Use this calculator to convert marks to CGPA in seconds. It works as a mark to CGPA calculator or a total number to CGPA calculator: marks in, CGPA out.
This marks to CGPA calculator for engineering students handles degree and diploma marks the same way. The answer never goes above 10, so anything from 95 percent up shows as 10. If you have subject wise marks and credits, the exact method in the next sections will give you a truer number, and the subject tab of the CGPA calculator does the final step for you.
- Write down each subject's marks and credits.
- Turn each mark into a grade using your university's bands.
- Replace each grade with its grade point.
- Multiply grade points by credits and add them.
- Divide by total credits to get the SGPA or CGPA.
Marks to CGPA calculator formula: the quick estimate
412 out of 500. Percentage = 412 / 500 x 100 = 82.4. CGPA by the 9.5 method = 82.4 / 9.5 = 8.674, so 8.67. By the 10 method = 82.4 / 10 = 8.24.
Total number to CGPA, 1350 out of 1800. Percentage = 75. CGPA = 75 / 9.5 = 7.89, or 7.5 by the 10 method.
The 9.5 divisor reverses CBSE's CGPA x 9.5 rule. It is common but not an official CBSE conversion. Dividing by 10 reverses the x 10 rule found in the VIT and AKTU regulations, among others. Both treat your marks as if every subject had the same weight, which is the weakness of this shortcut.
The exact way: subject marks to grade points
Universities never compute CGPA from total marks. Each subject's marks become a letter grade, the letter becomes a grade point, and the grade points are averaged with credits. Here is a five subject semester using the AKTU ordinance bands: A+ (90 or more) = 10, A (80 to 89) = 9, B+ (70 to 79) = 8, B (60 to 69) = 7, C (50 to 59) = 6. If you already have grades, a grades to CGPA calculator or grade points to CGPA calculator skips the first step, and the SGPA calculator does exactly that.
| Subject | Marks | Grade | Grade point | Credits | Credits x points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Subject 1 | 91 | A+ | 10 | 4 | 40 |
| Subject 2 | 84 | A | 9 | 4 | 36 |
| Subject 3 | 77 | B+ | 8 | 3 | 24 |
| Subject 4 | 66 | B | 7 | 3 | 21 |
| Subject 5 | 58 | C | 6 | 2 | 12 |
| Total | 376 | 16 | 133 |
Exact SGPA = 133 / 16 = 8.3125, printed as 8.31.
Quick estimate from the same marks: 376 / 500 = 75.2 percent, giving 7.92 by the 9.5 method and 7.52 by the 10 method.
The exact figure is far higher because 91 earns the same 10 points as 100, and the strong subjects carry more credits. The reverse can happen too, so use the grade band method whenever you know the subject marks.
Grade to CGPA: marks bands at three universities
Use your own university's bands. These three come from their published regulations or ordinances.
| Grade point | VTU 2022 scheme | Anna University R2021 | AKTU |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | O: 90 to 100 | O: 91 to 100 | A+: 90 and above |
| 9 | A+: 80 to 89 | A+: 81 to 90 | A: 80 to 89 |
| 8 | A: 70 to 79 | A: 71 to 80 | B+: 70 to 79 |
| 7 | B+: 60 to 69 | B+: 61 to 70 | B: 60 to 69 |
| 6 | B: 55 to 59 | B: 56 to 60 | C: 50 to 59 |
| 5 | C: 50 to 54 | C: 50 to 55 | D: 45 to 49 |
| 4 | P: 40 to 49 | none | E: 40 to 44 |
| 0 | F: below 40 | U: below 50 | F: below 40 |
Anna University uses these absolute bands for small classes and labs and relative grading for larger classes, so your grade can differ. For other universities, the grade points calculator on the SGPA calculator page has the right scale, and the VTU CGPA calculator page explains VTU's bands in detail.

Errors in converting marks to CGPA
| Error | Effect | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Using total marks when grade bands apply | CGPA can be off by most of a point | Grade each subject first |
| Ignoring credits | A one credit lab counts like a four credit paper | Weight each grade point by credits |
| Mixing internal and external marks wrongly | Wrong subject total, wrong grade | Use the final subject total on the marks card |
| Quoting the estimate as an official CGPA | Will not match the grade card | Write the CGPA only from the grade card |
Going the other way, from CGPA back to marks out of any total, is covered by the CGPA to marks calculator.
Where to find subject marks and credits
Subject marks, both internal and end semester, appear on the result portal and the marks card where your university prints them. Credits for each subject are in the syllabus or scheme of study for your branch and on the grade card. If only grades are printed, you already have what you need: skip the marks and enter the grades directly in the SGPA calculator.
Questions students ask
How do I convert marks to CGPA?
For a quick figure, find your percentage and divide by 9.5 (or by 10 at universities that multiply CGPA by 10). For the exact figure, convert every subject's mark to a grade point with your university's bands and average them with credits.
Can a grade to CGPA calculator work for engineering?
Yes. Pick the grade of each subject and its credits in the SGPA calculator, which turns grades into points with your university's scale and gives the credit weighted result.
What CGPA is 400 out of 500?
400 out of 500 is 80 percent, which is about 8.42 by the 9.5 method and 8.0 by the 10 method. The exact CGPA depends on your subject grades.
How do grade points to CGPA work?
Weight every grade point by the credits of its subject, total those weighted points, and share that total over all credits. That gives SGPA for a semester, and the same over all semesters gives CGPA.
Why is my estimated CGPA different from my grade card?
The estimate uses total marks and ignores grade bands and credits. Your grade card uses both, so the figures rarely match exactly.
Can I get CGPA from subject marks of Class 10?
CBSE no longer gives CGPA. When a form still wants a CGPA, the common way is percentage divided by 9.5, but check whether the form gives its own rule.
