CGPA to percentage depends on who awarded the CGPA: CBSE and Delhi University multiply by 9.5, most engineering universities use a straight x 10, while some deduct 0.5 or 0.75 before multiplying, so a CGPA of 8.0 can mean 72.5, 75, 76 or 80 percent. Type your CGPA in the converter above, set the second box to the institution that awarded it, and you get the figure under that exact rule.
This page collects every rule we could check against an official regulation or notice, explains why they differ, and links a separate page for each university with its grade scale and worked examples. If your university is not on the list, the section on unpublished rules tells you what to do.

Percentage = CGPA x 9.5 (CBSE) or CGPA x 10 or (CGPA - k) x 10
k is 0.5 or 0.75 for the universities that subtract before multiplying. Use only the rule your own university publishes.
Working the converter at the top of this page
The converter has two inputs. In Your CGPA type the number exactly as your grade card prints it, for example 7.84. In University or board pick your institution. The list starts on CBSE because that is the rule most people mean, so change it if you studied anywhere else.
The result shows your percentage in large type, the rule that produced it, and a comparison strip showing the figure other common rules would produce. That list is there for comparison only. Tap Swap direction to run it backward, from a percentage to a CGPA, which helps when a form asks for a CGPA but your mark sheet shows only percentage.
- Find your final or latest CGPA on the grade card.
- Find out which rule your board or university uses (table below).
- Apply it: multiply by 9.5 or 10, or subtract 0.5 or 0.75 first and then multiply by 10.
- Round to two decimals and keep a note of the rule you used.
- For official use, ask the university for a conversion certificate.
CGPA to percentage formula: the three families of rules
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is an average of grade points out of 10, not a share of marks, so it has to be translated. Here is how to calculate CGPA into percentage in practice: find which of these three families your university belongs to, then apply that one rule.
- Multiply by 9.5. CBSE brought this in when Class 10 results were graded in CGPA, and called the result indicative. Delhi University uses the same multiplier for its CBCS results.
- Multiply by 10. VIT, SRM, AKTU, Anna University, KTU (under its current orders), the VTU 2022 scheme, MAHE and RTU Kota state that CGPA x 10 is the equivalent percentage.
- Subtract, then multiply by 10. JNTUH, GTU and BPUT use (CGPA - 0.5) x 10. MAKAUT, JNTUK and the VTU 2015 scheme, 2017 scheme and 2018 scheme use (CGPA - 0.75) x 10.
Two universities sit outside these groups. SPPU uses a different straight line for each CGPA band, and Mumbai University dropped its old 7.1 x CGPI + 11 rule for Arts, Science, Commerce and Management colleges, which now report the actual percentage from your marks.
Why universities convert CGPA in different ways
A grade point stands for a band of marks, not one mark. If an O grade covers 90 to 100, then a 10 point student may have scored anything from 90 to 100. Each university picks a conversion that it believes matches the marks its own students really scored.
- CBSE looked at the marks of students who earned the top grade band of 91 to 100 over five years. They averaged about 95, so 10 grade points were set equal to 95 percent, which gives the 9.5 multiplier. The rule appears in CBSE circular 24 on the CGPA scheme.
- Universities that use x 10 treat the grade point scale as a straight copy of the marks scale. It is simple and easy for employers to check.
- Subtracting 0.5 or 0.75 pulls the figure down because the lower edge of each grade band sits below its grade point times 10. JNTUK's regulations call its minus 0.75 rule one made as per AICTE regulations.
- SPPU uses bands because its grade bands are not evenly spaced, so one straight line would overstate some students and understate others.
None of these is more correct than another. The only figure that counts for you is the one your own university prints or certifies.

| IGNOU | Marks based: 30% assignments + 70% term end exam | Not CGPA based |
VTU students admitted under the 2021 scheme should check the grade card or the VTU conversion certificate, because published sources disagree on whether that scheme uses x 10 or minus 0.75.
Universities with no published conversion rule
For these universities we could not find one official formula. Their pages show what x 10, x 9.5 and the minus 0.75 rule give side by side, and the calculator on each page lets you choose. For a figure you can put on a form, get the conversion certificate or the written rule from your exam section.

How to calculate percentage from CGPA: four real cases
VIT student, CGPA 8.75. VIT's regulations say CGPA x 10, so 8.75 x 10 = 87.5%.
JNTUH student, CGPA 7.36. (7.36 - 0.5) x 10 = 6.86 x 10 = 68.6%. Under a plain x 10 rule this student would wrongly claim 73.6%.
SPPU student, CGPA 9.1. 9.1 falls in the 8.25 to 9.49 band, where the formula is 12 x CGPA - 25. So 12 x 9.1 = 109.2, minus 25 = 84.2%.
MAKAUT student, CGPA 7.25. (7.25 - 0.75) x 10 = 65%, which matches the minimum assured table on MAKAUT's own conversion certificate.
Notice how the method changes the answer even for similar CGPAs. That is why you should never copy a percentage from a friend at another university.

Questions students ask
How to convert CGPA into percentage?
Find the rule your board or university uses and apply it to your final CGPA. CBSE and DU multiply by 9.5, most engineering universities multiply by 10, and JNTUH, GTU, BPUT, MAKAUT, JNTUK and older VTU schemes subtract 0.5 or 0.75 first.
How to calculate percentage from CGPA out of 10?
On a 10 point scale, the simplest rule is CGPA x 10, so 7.6 becomes 76 percent. Rely on it only when your own regulations state it; otherwise apply the rule listed from the table on this page.
Is CGPA x 9.5 correct for engineering?
Usually not. The 9.5 multiplier is CBSE's rule for its old Class 10 scheme and Delhi University's rule. Engineering universities such as VTU, AKTU, Anna University and JNTU publish their own rules.
What is the full form of CGPA and how does it relate to percentage?
CGPA means Cumulative Grade Point Average, an average of grade points across all semesters on a 10 point scale. It does not measure marks directly, so each university publishes a rule to translate it into a percentage.
How to convert CGPA into percentage out of 4?
A 4 point CGPA is a US style GPA. Divide by 4 and multiply by 100 for a straight figure, or use the band table on the GPA to percentage page. Evaluation services convert course by course, so their figure can differ.
Which converted figure goes on a job application?
Write the figure from your university's rule or conversion certificate. If the notification itself states a conversion rule, follow the notification for that form.
What is 7 CGPA in percentage?
It is 66.5 percent under CBSE's x 9.5, 70 percent under x 10, 65 percent under (CGPA - 0.5) x 10 and 62.5 percent under (CGPA - 0.75) x 10. The 7 CGPA chart page lists every value from 7.00 to 7.99.
