An overall CGPA calculator gives your final, cumulative grade point average with each term's SGPA counted in proportion to its credits: across eight semesters of 167 credits with SGPAs from 7.2 to 9.0, the student below ends with an overall CGPA of 8.06. Enter each semester in the calculator above, with its credits, and you get the same figure your consolidated grade sheet will print.
This page is about the whole degree: the eight semester calculation, lateral entry students who start in semester 3, how universities decide first class or distinction from the final CGPA, and the number that belongs on a job or admission application.

Overall CGPA = sum of (SGPA x credits) for all semesters / total credits
Use every semester you have completed. For a finished degree that is usually 8 semesters for B.Tech, 6 for a three year degree and 4 for a PG course.
Using the overall CGPA calculator
Give one row to each semester. Type the SGPA exactly as printed and that semester's total credits next to it. Six rows appear at the start, so press + Add row twice for an eight semester B.Tech. For a two semester or three semester check midway through the course, just leave the extra rows empty.
The panel shows the overall CGPA in large type, the plain average of your SGPAs beside it, and the CGPA translated under common percentage rules. If the credit box is left empty on every row, every semester is treated alike, which is fine only when all semesters had the same credits. Whether you call it a total CGPA calculator or an all sem CGPA calculator, the method is the one shown here. This makes it a cgpa calculator of all semesters, and also a quick 4 semester cgpa calculator for a two year PG course.
- Collect the grade cards of every semester, including revised ones after supplementary exams.
- Enter each semester's SGPA and its total credits in a new row.
- Read the overall CGPA in the result panel.
- Compare it with the CGPA on your latest grade card.
- Apply your university's rule if a form needs a percentage.
Final CGPA calculator: an eight semester example
| Term | SGPA earned | Credits | Credit points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7.2 | 20 | 144 |
| 2 | 7.6 | 21 | 159.6 |
| 3 | 7.9 | 23 | 181.7 |
| 4 | 8.1 | 23 | 186.3 |
| 5 | 8.3 | 22 | 182.6 |
| 6 | 8.0 | 22 | 176 |
| 7 | 8.6 | 20 | 172 |
| 8 | 9.0 | 16 | 144 |
| Total | 167 | 1346.2 |
Overall CGPA = 1346.2 / 167 = 8.061, printed as 8.06.
The plain average of the eight SGPAs is 64.7 / 8 = 8.09. It is higher because the strong final semester has only 16 credits, while the weaker early semesters carry 20 or more.
As a percentage, 8.06 is 80.6 under x 10, 76.57 under x 9.5, 75.6 under (CGPA - 0.5) x 10 and 73.1 under (CGPA - 0.75) x 10. Which one applies depends only on the university.
Lateral entry and transfer students
Diploma holders who join B.Tech in the second year normally have grades only from semester 3 onward, so their overall CGPA covers six semesters. Using the same student's semesters 3 to 8 from the table:
Credit points: 181.7 + 186.3 + 182.6 + 176 + 172 + 144 = 1042.6.
Credits: 23 + 23 + 22 + 22 + 20 + 16 = 126.
Overall CGPA = 1042.6 / 126 = 8.275, printed as 8.27 or 8.28 depending on whether your university truncates or rounds.
If you transferred between colleges, check whether credits from the first college were carried over. Only credits the university has accepted on your grade card count.
Class, division and distinction from the overall CGPA
Universities award a class from the final CGPA, often with extra conditions. These are the rules we could confirm:
| University | First class with distinction | First class | Second class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anna University R2021 | 8.50 and above, all passed at first appearance | 6.50 and above | The rest who pass |
| JNTUH R18 | 8.00 and above, with first appearance and no detention | 6.50 to below 8.00 | 5.50 to below 6.50 |
| JNTUK R20 | 7.75 and above, no supplementary | 6.75 and above | 5.75 to below 6.75 |
| AKTU | Honours: 7.5 and above, first attempt | 6.5 and above | Others who qualify |
| VTU | 70% and above after conversion | 60 to below 70% | Below 60% (2022 scheme: 50 to 60%) |
VIT prints only the CGPA, with no class, and MAKAUT awards no class or division at all. If your university is not here, the regulations booklet of your batch has the table.
Year wise and degree averages
Some universities report a yearly figure as well. AKTU's YGPA is the average of the odd and even semester SGPAs of a year, so SGPAs of 8.3 and 8.0 in the third year give a YGPA of 8.15. MAKAUT prints a YGPA for each year and a DGPA for the whole degree, and its rule for weighting years should be read from your own regulations.
A YGPA or DGPA is not the same as a credit weighted CGPA, so do not mix them in the calculator. Enter semester SGPAs only, and if your university gives only a DGPA, use that number as your overall figure.
Common errors in the all semester total
| Pitfall | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Using the first attempt grade card after a supplementary pass | Old F still counted | Enter the SGPA from the revised card |
| Leaving out a short semester | Credits do not add up to the degree total | Count every semester, even an internship one |
| Mixing YGPA rows with SGPA rows | Some credits counted twice | Use semester SGPAs only |
| Averaging CGPAs printed on each card | Earlier semesters get counted again and again | Only the latest CGPA matters; or use SGPAs |
The last one is common. Each card's CGPA already includes all earlier semesters, so averaging those printed CGPAs gives a wrong total. Your most recent CGPA is the overall figure so far.
What to write on forms
Write the final overall CGPA from the consolidated grade sheet, to two decimals, on a 10 point scale. If the form also wants a percentage, convert with your own university's rule using the CGPA to percentage page, and keep the university's conversion certificate ready for verification. Still studying? Write the CGPA up to the last declared semester and say so. To combine just two or three semesters, or to work out the SGPA a target needs, the SGPA to CGPA calculator has a backward method.
Questions students ask
How do I calculate overall CGPA for all semesters?
Work out credit points term by term, sum them across the whole degree, and divide by the degree's total credits. The calculator above does this as you type.
Can an average of CGPA calculator give my overall CGPA?
No. Each printed CGPA already includes earlier semesters, so averaging them double counts. Your latest CGPA is the overall CGPA so far.
Is an aggregate CGPA calculator different from a cumulative CGPA calculator?
No, aggregate and cumulative mean the same here: one figure covering every semester. Some forms use the word aggregate when they actually want a percentage, so read the form carefully.
What overall CGPA is first class?
It depends on the university. First class starts at 6.50 for Anna University and JNTUH, 6.75 for JNTUK and 6.5 for AKTU, while VTU decides it from the converted percentage.
Does an arrear or backlog change my final CGPA?
Once you pass the subject, the new grade replaces the fail in most universities, and the CGPA rises. Some universities also stop you from getting distinction if you did not pass at the first attempt.
Will it work as a semester wise CGPA calculator?
Yes. Fill rows one at a time and the CGPA after each added semester appears at once, so you can see how it changed.
