SGPA to percentage uses the same rule your university applies to CGPA: SGPA x 10 at universities like VTU (2022 scheme), AKTU and Anna University, SGPA x 9.5 under the CBSE style rule, or (SGPA - 0.75) x 10 at MAKAUT and JNTUK, so an SGPA of 8.46 reads as 84.6, 80.37 or 77.1 percent. Type the SGPA in the calculator above and choose your university to see the figure.
Most regulations define the conversion for the final CGPA, so a semester percentage is an indication of where you stand, not a certified number. This page also covers SGPA to marks, why total marks cannot give an exact SGPA, and how to get a percentage across all semesters.
At a glance
x 10 universities
Percentage = SGPA x 10CBSE style
Percentage = SGPA x 9.5Minus rules
(SGPA - 0.75) x 10 or (SGPA - 0.5) x 10SGPA to marks
Marks = percentage x semester total / 100Official figure
Comes from the final CGPA, not one semester
Semester percentage = SGPA x 10 (or your university's CGPA rule)
Use the conversion rule that your university publishes for CGPA, applied to the semester's SGPA. The result is indicative for that semester.
What the SGPA to percentage calculator needs
Two things: Your SGPA, typed from the semester grade card (for example 7.92), and University or board, which picks the rule. The list opens on CBSE, so change it to your university or to "Multiply by 10" if that is your rule.
The panel gives the semester percentage and, below it, what the same SGPA becomes under the other rules in the list. Use Swap direction for the reverse, which answers how much SGPA a target percentage needs. No entry for your university? Its own page on this site explains which option to choose. Some call this an SGPA into percentage calculator, others an SGPA in percentage calculator; the job is the same.
- Note the SGPA from your semester grade card.
- Find your university's conversion rule.
- Apply it to the SGPA.
- For marks, multiply the percentage by the semester total and divide by 100.
SGPA to percentage formula by university
There is no separate semester formula at most universities. They state one rule for CGPA, and students apply it to SGPA because both use the same 10 point scale.
| University | Rule | SGPA 8.46 gives |
|---|---|---|
| VTU 2022 scheme, AKTU, Anna University, KTU, VIT, SRM | SGPA x 10 | 84.6% |
| CBSE style, Delhi University | SGPA x 9.5 | 80.37% |
| JNTUH, GTU, BPUT | (SGPA - 0.5) x 10 | 79.6% |
| MAKAUT, JNTUK, VTU 2018 scheme | (SGPA - 0.75) x 10 | 77.1% |
SPPU uses separate formulas for each band, so check the SPPU page. The full list of rules is on the CGPA to percentage hub.
Worked examples
VTU 2022 scheme, SGPA 7.9. 7.9 x 10 = 79% for that semester.
JNTUH, SGPA 7.9. (7.9 - 0.5) x 10 = 7.4 x 10 = 74%. Same SGPA, five points lower, purely because of the rule.
Any x 10 university, SGPA 8.46, semester total 750 marks. 8.46 x 10 = 84.6%. Marks equivalent = 84.6 x 750 / 100 = 634.5.
The last figure is an equivalent, not your real marks. Your actual marks per subject are on the marks card, and many universities that use grades do not print raw totals at all.
SGPA to marks and marks to SGPA
An SGPA to total marks calculator is simple arithmetic, but a total marks to SGPA calculator can never be exact. Going from SGPA to marks is easy: convert to a percentage, then take that share of the total. Going the other way is not exact, because SGPA is built from subject grades and credits, not from total marks.
Four subjects under AKTU's bands (90 and above A+ = 10, 80 to 89 A = 9, 70 to 79 B+ = 8, 60 to 69 B = 7):
| Subject | Marks out of 100 | Grade | Points | Credits | Credit points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Subject 1 | 92 | A+ | 10 | 4 | 40 |
| Subject 2 | 74 | B+ | 8 | 4 | 32 |
| Subject 3 | 63 | B | 7 | 3 | 21 |
| Subject 4 | 85 | A | 9 | 3 | 27 |
| Total | 314 | 14 | 120 |
SGPA = 120 / 14 = 8.57. Total marks give 314 / 400 = 78.5%, and 78.5 / 10 would suggest an SGPA of only 7.85.
The gap comes from grade bands: 92 and 99 both earn 10 points. For a rough figure from your total, use the marks to CGPA calculator, and for an exact SGPA, enter grades in the SGPA calculator.
SGPA to CGPA to percentage for all semesters
To get one percentage across your course, do not convert each semester and average the percentages. First combine all SGPAs into a CGPA with credits using the SGPA to CGPA tool, then convert that CGPA once. With a x 10 rule both orders give the same answer, but with a minus rule or SPPU's bands they can differ, and only the CGPA route matches what the university certifies.

Mistakes with semester percentages
| Mistake | Problem | Do this instead |
|---|---|---|
| Quoting a semester percentage as your degree percentage | Forms want the final figure | Convert the final CGPA |
| Averaging semester percentages | Ignores credits and minus rules | Combine SGPAs first, then convert |
| Using x 9.5 at an x 10 university | Understates by about 4 points at SGPA 8 | Pick your university's rule |
| Treating equivalent marks as real marks | They are a conversion, not marks scored | Quote marks only from the marks card |
The university, not this site, decides any certified percentage. For official use ask for a conversion certificate.
Questions students ask
How is SGPA converted into a percentage?
Apply your university's CGPA rule to the SGPA. For most universities that is SGPA x 10; for the CBSE style rule it is x 9.5; JNTUH, GTU and BPUT subtract 0.5 first, while MAKAUT and JNTUK subtract 0.75.
Is there a percentage to SGPA calculator?
Yes: the Swap direction button on this tool reverses your chosen rule, for example dividing by 10 for an x 10 university.
Can I find SGPA from total marks?
Only roughly. SGPA uses the grade in each subject weighted by credits, so the same total can give different SGPAs. Convert subject marks to grades first for an exact figure.
Which gives my percentage, CGPA or SGPA?
Use the final CGPA for your overall percentage, and the SGPA only for a single semester. Both use the same rule.
What is 8 SGPA in percentage?
80 percent under x 10, 76 under x 9.5, 75 under (SGPA - 0.5) x 10 and 72.5 under (SGPA - 0.75) x 10.
Does the university print a percentage for each semester?
Some marks cards show marks and a percentage, but most grade based cards show only SGPA and CGPA. A conversion certificate covers the final CGPA.
