VTU CGPA to percentage depends on your scheme: under the 2022 scheme you multiply CGPA by 10, so 8.2 becomes 82 percent, and under the 2018 scheme you take (CGPA - 0.75) x 10, so the same 8.2 becomes 74.5 percent. Students of the 2015 scheme and 2017 scheme follow the 2018 scheme rule.
Pick your scheme in the calculator above and type the CGPA from your latest grade card. For 2021 scheme students the rule is not settled, so read on before you write a figure on any form. Only VTU can certify a converted percentage.

CGPA is the cumulative grade point average on your latest VTU grade card, out of 10. Use SGPA in its place only for a rough single semester figure.
Which VTU CGPA to percentage rule is yours
VTU changed its conversion when it moved to the O to F grading of the 2022 scheme. Before that, the S to F grading of the 2018 regulations used a subtraction. The table below shows where each rule comes from.
| Scheme | Rule | CGPA 8.20 gives | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 scheme | CGPA x 10 | 82.0 | Confirmed in the regulations |
| 2021 scheme | Not settled | Ask VTU | Sources disagree |
| 2018 scheme | (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 | 74.5 | Confirmed in the regulations |
| 2017 scheme | (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 | 74.5 | Same as 2018 scheme |
| 2015 scheme | (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 | 74.5 | Same as 2018 scheme |
The 2018 scheme rule is in the VTU B.E. regulations for the 2018 scheme, which also give 8.20 = 74.5 as their own example. Some websites say the 2021 scheme uses x 10 and others keep the minus 0.75 step. Until you see it on your own grade card or a VTU conversion certificate, do not pick one yourself.
- Check the scheme printed on your grade card.
- Note the CGPA to two decimals.
- For the 2022 scheme, multiply the CGPA by 10.
- For the 2015 scheme, 2017 scheme or 2018 scheme, subtract 0.75 and then multiply by 10.
- Compare the result with the class bands: 70, 60 and below.
Worked examples with real CGPAs
2022 scheme, CGPA 7.04. 7.04 x 10 = 70.4 percent. That is just over 70, so the class is FCD.
2018 scheme, CGPA 7.04. 7.04 - 0.75 = 6.29, and 6.29 x 10 = 62.9 percent. That is first class (FC), not FCD.
2018 scheme, CGPA 8.67. 8.67 - 0.75 = 7.92, so 79.2 percent.
2022 scheme, CGPA 6.38. 63.8 percent, which is FC.
The same CGPA lands 7.5 points lower under the older rule. That gap is fixed: (CGPA x 10) minus ((CGPA - 0.75) x 10) is always 7.5.
VTU CGPA to percentage table for common values
Read across from your CGPA. If yours falls between two rows, use the calculator above for the exact figure.
| CGPA | 2022 scheme (x 10) | 2018 scheme ((CGPA - 0.75) x 10) |
|---|---|---|
| 5.00 | 50.0 | 42.5 |
| 5.50 | 55.0 | 47.5 |
| 6.00 | 60.0 | 52.5 |
| 6.50 | 65.0 | 57.5 |
| 6.75 | 67.5 | 60.0 |
| 7.00 | 70.0 | 62.5 |
| 7.50 | 75.0 | 67.5 |
| 7.75 | 77.5 | 70.0 |
| 8.00 | 80.0 | 72.5 |
| 8.20 | 82.0 | 74.5 |
| 8.50 | 85.0 | 77.5 |
| 9.00 | 90.0 | 82.5 |
| 9.50 | 95.0 | 87.5 |
| 10.00 | 100.0 | 92.5 |
Notice that the older rule tops out at 92.5 percent even for a perfect 10. Recruiters who know VTU understand this.
Percentage to CGPA and percentage to SGPA at VTU
Some forms ask the reverse. Under the 2022 scheme, divide the percentage by 10: 65 percent is 6.50. Under the 2018 scheme, divide by 10 and add 0.75: 65 percent is 6.50 + 0.75 = 7.25. Press Swap direction in the calculator to do this.
The same arithmetic gives a percentage to SGPA estimate for one semester, and the VTU calculator above handles that too. VTU's clauses talk about CGPA, so treat a semester figure as your own estimate.
Class after conversion: FCD, FC and SC
| Class | Converted percentage | Lowest CGPA, 2022 scheme | Lowest CGPA, 2018 scheme |
|---|---|---|---|
| First class with distinction | 70 or more | 7.00 | 7.75 |
| First class | 60 to below 70 | 6.00 | 6.75 |
| Second class | below 60 | 5.00 (50 percent) | below 6.75 |
To build the CGPA itself from semester results, use the VTU CGPA calculator. For a single term, the VTU SGPA calculator works from grades and credits.
VTU CGPA to percentage conversion certificate
A placement cell, a foreign university or a government form may want proof of the converted figure. The proof is a conversion certificate issued by VTU, not a screenshot from any calculator. Ask your college exam section how VTU accepts the request in your batch and pay whatever fee VTU lists online.
Carry the final grade card and a copy of the clause that applies to your scheme. If the certificate shows a different number from your own sum, the certificate wins. See our general CGPA to percentage certificate guide for what such a letter usually contains.
Mix ups that give a wrong VTU percentage
| Error | Result | Remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Using x 10 on a 2018 scheme card | Figure is 7.5 points too high | Subtract 0.75 before multiplying |
| Subtracting 0.75 on a 2022 scheme card | Figure is 7.5 points too low | Multiply straight by 10 |
| Using x 9.5 because a friend did | That is a CBSE school rule | Use the VTU clause for your scheme |
| Converting each SGPA and averaging | Ignores credit weights | Convert the final CGPA once |
| Guessing for the 2021 scheme | Two rules circulate | Get the VTU certificate |
Questions students ask
How does VTU turn a CGPA into a percentage?
How you convert a CGPA to a percentage in VTU depends on the scheme. For the 2022 scheme multiply CGPA by 10. For any older scheme listed above, take away 0.75 and then multiply by 10.
8 CGPA equals what percentage at VTU?
The 2022 scheme gives 80. The 2018 scheme gives 72.5, since 8 minus 0.75 is 7.25 and 7.25 x 10 is 72.5.
Is the VTU percentage calculator result accepted by companies?
It shows the figure the VTU rule gives, which is what most HR forms ask for. For anything official, attach the VTU conversion certificate instead of a figure you worked out.
What is the VTU CGPA to percentage formula for the 2021 scheme?
It is not confirmed. Some sources give CGPA x 10 and others keep the minus 0.75 step, so go by what the grade card prints, or request a certificate from VTU.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA for VTU?
For the 2022 scheme divide the percentage by 10. For the 2018 scheme divide by 10 and add 0.75, so 70 percent is 7.75.
Why does the same CGPA give two different percentages?
VTU wrote different rules into different regulations. The older schemes take 0.75 off first, so every CGPA comes out 7.5 points lower than under the 2022 scheme.
