A CBSE percentage calculator adds the marks of five chosen subjects and expresses the total as a share of 500, so a best five total of 449 is 89.8 percent. CBSE itself does not calculate or declare a percentage; when you have more than five subjects, the college or employer decides which five count.
The calculator above opens with best five ticked and also shows the all subjects figure. Below are real Class 10 and Class 12 examples, what the board's circular actually says, why A1 and A2 cannot be turned into marks, and the assumptions that lead students to the wrong number.

CBSE circular, Calculation of Percentage, Class X and XII
Percentage = (marks in the 5 chosen subjects / 500) x 100
Main subjects on a CBSE mark sheet are usually out of 100 with theory and internal assessment combined, so five of them make 500. Type a different maximum if your sheet shows one.
What CBSE says about percentage
CBSE's circular titled Calculation of Percentage, Class X and XII, settles the question in three points. The board awards no overall division, distinction or aggregate, under its examination bye laws. It does not calculate or declare a percentage. If a candidate has offered more than five subjects, the institution or employer admitting the candidate decides on the best five. You can read the notice on the CBSE site (CBSE circular on calculation of percentage).
So any CBSE percentage, including the one from this tool, is a calculation made by someone other than the board. Widely repeated lines such as English plus best four are not in the circular. A college may still require a language, as Delhi University does, and JEE and JoSAA set their own eligibility rules.
- Take the marks of every subject from the CBSE mark sheet.
- Check which five subjects your form or college wants.
- Add the marks of those five.
- Divide by 500 and multiply by 100.
- State the subjects used if the form has space for it.
Using the CBSE percentage calculator
Enter each subject from your mark sheet with its total marks. Leave the Out of box blank for a paper out of 100. Add a row if you took a seventh subject.
With best five ticked, the tool keeps the five subjects with the highest percentage and shows the working, for example Maths 95 + Science 89 and so on. The all subjects line lets you compare. If a college has named its five, untick the box and delete the other rows instead, so the tool counts exactly those.
CBSE 10th result percentage calculator example
Class 10 marks: English 82, Hindi 74, Maths 95, Science 89, Social Science 86, and Information Technology 97 as the sixth (skill) subject.
Highest five: 97 + 95 + 89 + 86 + 82 = 449, so 449 / 500 x 100 = 89.8 percent.
Five main subjects: 82 + 74 + 95 + 89 + 86 = 426, so 85.2 percent.
| Choice of five | Subjects added | Total | Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highest five marks | IT 97, Maths 95, Science 89, SST 86, English 82 | 449 / 500 | 89.8 |
| Five main subjects, no skill subject | English 82, Hindi 74, Maths 95, Science 89, SST 86 | 426 / 500 | 85.2 |
| All six subjects | Every subject on the sheet | 523 / 600 | 87.17 |
The gap is more than four points, which is why the form's own rule matters more than any calculator setting.
CBSE 12th percentage calculator example
Class 12 marks: English 88, Physics 79, Chemistry 84, Maths 91, Physical Education 94.
Five subjects: 88 + 79 + 84 + 91 + 94 = 436. Percentage = 436 / 500 x 100 = 87.2 percent.
PCM only, as some engineering forms ask: 79 + 84 + 91 = 254, and 254 / 300 x 100 = 84.67 percent.
For PCM, PCB and stream specific figures, the 12th percentage calculator has a table of which subjects each kind of form counts.
CBSE grade to percentage: why it does not work
Current CBSE mark sheets print a grade beside each mark, but these are positional grades, given by rank among the candidates who passed that subject, not by fixed mark bands.
| Positional grade | Who gets it |
|---|---|
| A1 | Top one eighth of the candidates who passed the subject |
| A2 | The next one eighth |
| Grades below A2 | Each following one eighth in turn, down to the lowest pass grade |
| E | Did not pass the subject |
Because an A1 in one subject might start at 93 and in another at 88, a grade cannot be turned back into marks. There are no grade points either, so a CBSE GPA calculator has nothing to work with. Always use the marks.
Old CGPA grade sheets
Students who took Class 10 under the earlier CCE scheme have a grade sheet with a CGPA instead of marks. For those, CBSE gave an indicative rule: CGPA x 9.5. The CBSE CGPA to percentage page has the grade table and a chart. That rule has nothing to do with current marks based results and should not be applied to them.
Assumptions that give the wrong CBSE figure
Each of these is common in school groups at result time.
| Assumption | Reality | Safer step |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE prints my official percentage | The board calculates none and awards no aggregate | Work it out from marks and say which subjects you used |
| English always has to be in the best five | No such CBSE rule; some colleges ask for a language | Follow the admission form |
| An A1 grade means 91 to 100 marks | Today A1 is the top eighth of passed students, not a mark band | Use your actual marks |
| Multiply by 9.5 to get a percentage | That was for old Class 10 CGPA sheets | Divide marks by maximum instead |
| Use theory marks for Science | The subject total includes internal assessment | Type the subject total |
ICSE, SSLC and state board students will find their own tools through the marks percentage calculator hub, including the SSLC percentage calculator and the ISC percentage calculator.
Questions students ask
How is a CBSE percentage worked out from marks?
Sum the five subjects your form or college counts and take that over 500, times 100; 449 works out to 89.8 percent. CBSE itself does not calculate a percentage.
Is English compulsory in the CBSE best of 5 percentage?
Not as a CBSE rule. Picking the five is left to whoever admits you. Some colleges require a language, so check the admission form.
Does a CBSE result show a percentage or division?
No. The result carries neither, and the board declares no aggregate. The mark sheet shows subject marks and positional grades.
Can I convert a CBSE grade to percentage?
No. Current CBSE grades are positional, so A1 means the top eighth of passed candidates in that subject, not a fixed range of marks. Use the marks printed beside the grade.
Should I include the skill subject in CBSE class 10 percentage?
Only if the form allows it. The best five tick will include a skill subject if it is among your top five; if the college wants five main subjects, delete that row.
What is the CBSE class 12 percentage for PCM?
Total the three science papers, Physics, Chemistry and Maths, then take that over 300. Physics 79, Chemistry 84 and Maths 91 make 254, which is 84.67 percent.
