SGPA to CGPA is a credit weighted average: weight every semester's SGPA by its credits, total those credit points, then share them over all the credits taken, so SGPAs of 8.4 on 21 credits and 7.6 on 25 credits give a CGPA of 7.97, not 8.0. Type your SGPAs and credits in the calculator above and the CGPA updates as you go.
Where each semester has identical credits, a plain average of the SGPAs already equals the CGPA. This page shows both methods, how to work backward from a CGPA to the SGPA of one semester, and how to plan the SGPA you need next.

Filling in the SGPA to CGPA calculator
Each row is one semester. In the first box type the SGPA from that semester's grade card, such as 8.12. In the second box type that semester's total credits, such as 24. The credits box says optional because without it the semesters are weighted alike and you get a plain average. In short, this SGPA to CGPA converter doubles as a CGPA calculator from SGPA values printed on your cards.
Six rows are ready, enough for three years. Press + Add row for semesters 7 and 8. The result panel gives the CGPA, the plain average next to it so you can see the gap, and the same CGPA under common percentage rules. The working line prints every SGPA x credits product, which makes it easy to spot a typing error.
- Write down each semester's SGPA and total credits.
- Multiply each SGPA by its credits.
- Add all the products.
- Add all the credits.
- Divide the first total by the second.
SGPA to CGPA formula explained
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) covers one semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) covers everything so far. You cannot get the CGPA by adding SGPAs or by averaging them blindly, because a semester with more credits holds more grade points.
The right way is to go back to credit points. A semester's credit points are its SGPA times its credits. Add the credit points of all semesters and divide by all the credits. This is exactly how universities do it: SRM's regulations, for instance, define CGPA as semester credits times SGPA, totalled, over total credits.
Some universities compute CGPA straight from every course rather than from SGPAs. The answer is the same as long as you use each semester's full registered credits and the SGPA to two decimals.
Two semesters: CGPA from SGPA step by step
Semester 1: SGPA 8.4, 21 credits. Semester 2: SGPA 7.6, 25 credits.
Credit points: 8.4 x 21 = 176.4 and 7.6 x 25 = 190. Total = 366.4.
Credits: 21 + 25 = 46.
CGPA = 366.4 / 46 = 7.965, so 7.97.
The plain average would be (8.4 + 7.6) / 2 = 8.0. The weighted figure is lower because the weaker semester had four more credits.
Students often ask how to calculate the CGPA from SGPA once there are many semesters, and how to find the CGPA from SGPA values quickly. Keep adding rows. The table below follows one student through six semesters so you can see the running CGPA move.
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | Credit points | Running total points | Total credits | CGPA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7.4 | 20 | 148 | 148 | 20 | 7.40 |
| 2 | 7.9 | 22 | 173.8 | 321.8 | 42 | 7.66 |
| 3 | 8.3 | 22 | 182.6 | 504.4 | 64 | 7.88 |
| 4 | 8.1 | 24 | 194.4 | 698.8 | 88 | 7.94 |
| 5 | 8.6 | 22 | 189.2 | 888 | 110 | 8.07 |
| 6 | 8.8 | 20 | 176 | 1064 | 130 | 8.18 |
CGPA to SGPA: working backward
Two backward questions come up often. Both use the same credit points idea, so the steps below work as a simple CGPA to SGPA converter by hand.
Find one semester's SGPA from two CGPAs. Your CGPA was 7.9 after semester 3 (66 credits) and 8.0 after semester 4 (88 credits), but you lost the semester 4 card.
Points after semester 4: 8.0 x 88 = 704. Points after semester 3: 7.9 x 66 = 521.4. Semester 4 points = 704 - 521.4 = 182.6. Semester 4 credits = 88 - 66 = 22. SGPA = 182.6 / 22 = 8.3.
SGPA needed for a target CGPA. After five semesters your CGPA is 7.6 on 110 credits. Semester 6 has 22 credits and you want 7.8 overall.
Needed points = 7.8 x 132 = 1029.6. Points you have = 7.6 x 110 = 836. Semester 6 must give 193.6 points, so SGPA = 193.6 / 22 = 8.8.
Because the printed CGPA is rounded, a backward figure can be off by a hundredth or two. Trust the grade card over the calculation.
SGPA to CGPA of one semester
After the first semester there is nothing to average, so your CGPA equals your SGPA. Many universities, VTU among them, print a CGPA only from the second semester for this reason. If a form asks for CGPA while you have finished only one semester, write the SGPA and mention that it is for semester 1.
To convert the result into a percentage, use your university's rule on the final CGPA. For one semester see SGPA to percentage; for the final figure, every university rule is collected under CGPA to percentage.
Errors that give a wrong CGPA
| Problem | Effect | Remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Plain average with unequal credits | Off by a few hundredths, sometimes more | Add credits to every row |
| Using credits earned instead of registered | Inflates CGPA in a semester with an F | Use the credits the university divides by |
| Old SGPA after a backlog is cleared | Understates the CGPA | Use the revised grade card |
| Rounding SGPAs to one decimal | Errors build up over semesters | Keep two decimals until the end |
Whether a failed course stays in at zero differs by university. VIT and SRM count it, Anna University leaves it out until you pass. Each university page on this site follows its own rule; VTU students can check theirs on the VTU CGPA calculator.
Where to find SGPA and credits
Each semester grade card prints a summary line with credits registered, credits earned, SGPA and, from semester 2, CGPA. If the card lists only course credits, add the credits of every course you registered for in that semester. The overall CGPA calculator covers final year totals, lateral entry and the CGPA printed on the degree grade sheet.
Questions students ask
How to convert SGPA into CGPA?
Find credit points for each semester (SGPA times its credits), total them, then divide by every credit you registered for. With equal credits each term, the plain average of SGPAs lands on the same CGPA.
What is the way to get CGPA from SGPA of all semesters?
Add one row per semester in the calculator with its SGPA and credits. The tool sums the credit points of every semester and divides by all the credits at once.
How to calculate SGPA from CGPA?
Multiply the new CGPA by total credits, subtract the old CGPA times the old credits, and divide by the credits of the latest semester. This gives that semester's SGPA.
Is CGPA the average of SGPA?
Only if all semesters carry equal credits. Otherwise it is a weighted average, and semesters with more credits count more.
What do SGPA and CGPA stand for?
SGPA is Semester Grade Point Average and CGPA is Cumulative Grade Point Average. Both are on a 10 point scale at most Indian universities.
Can a CGPA to SGPA calculator find my target SGPA?
Yes, with the backward method on this page: target CGPA times total credits, minus points already earned, divided by next semester's credits.
