This cut off calculator uses the TNEA engineering formula, Maths + Physics / 2 + Chemistry / 2 (maximum 200), so 98 in Maths, 96 in Physics and 94 in Chemistry give 98 + 48 + 47 = 193. Tamil Nadu engineering admission has no entrance exam; your rank comes from this 12th mark cut off.
The calculator also offers the common method for nursing and paramedical courses, Biology + Physics / 2 + Chemistry / 2, which you should check against the current prospectus. MBBS and BDS seats are filled on NEET scores only, so no 12th mark cut off applies to them.

How the cut off calculator above works
Pick the cut off type first. TNEA engineering cut off asks for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Nursing and paramedical (common method) asks for Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Type each mark out of 100, exactly as on your Class 12 mark sheet. As a Class 12 cut off calculator it handles these two formulas only.
The result shows your cut off out of 200, a bar for how close you are to 200, and the working line, for example Mathematics x 1 + Physics x 0.5 + Chemistry x 0.5. The calculator rejects any mark above 100, so scale first if a subject is out of 150 or 200.
- Read your Class 12 marks in Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
- Scale any subject that is not out of 100 to a mark out of 100.
- Halve Physics and halve Chemistry.
- Add Maths and the two halves for a cut off out of 200.
- For paramedical courses, use Biology in place of Maths and check the prospectus.
TNEA engineering cut off calculator: the rule in detail
Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions rank students on Class 12 marks. The formula gives Maths its full 100 and counts Physics and Chemistry at half weight, giving a maximum of 200:
Cut off = Maths + (Physics / 2) + (Chemistry / 2)
Because Maths carries as much weight as the other two subjects together, one extra mark in Maths is worth two extra marks in Physics. That is why two students with the same total in three subjects can end up with different cut offs.
Student A: Maths 92, Physics 85, Chemistry 88. Total 265. Cut off = 92 + 42.5 + 44 = 178.5.
Student B: Maths 85, Physics 92, Chemistry 88. Same total 265. Cut off = 85 + 46 + 44 = 175.
Ties at the same cut off are broken by further rules set out in the TNEA information brochure, so read that before counselling.
12th cut off marks table for engineering
| Maths | Physics | Chemistry | Working | Cut off / 200 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 100 | 100 | 100 + 50 + 50 | 200 |
| 99 | 97 | 98 | 99 + 48.5 + 49 | 196.5 |
| 98 | 96 | 94 | 98 + 48 + 47 | 193 |
| 95 | 90 | 92 | 95 + 45 + 46 | 186 |
| 92 | 85 | 88 | 92 + 42.5 + 44 | 178.5 |
| 90 | 88 | 85 | 90 + 44 + 42.5 | 176.5 |
| 85 | 80 | 82 | 85 + 40 + 41 | 166 |
| 80 | 75 | 78 | 80 + 37.5 + 39 | 156.5 |
| 75 | 68 | 71 | 75 + 34 + 35.5 | 144.5 |
| 70 | 65 | 68 | 70 + 32.5 + 34 | 136.5 |
| 60 | 55 | 58 | 60 + 27.5 + 29 | 116.5 |
Each row is checked by hand. Used as a cut off percentage calculator, just halve the result: a cut off of 178.5 is 89.25 percent of the maximum.
Biology cut off calculator for nursing and paramedical (common method)
For B.Sc Nursing and paramedical courses filled by the Tamil Nadu medical selection committee, the method most often used is:
Cut off = Biology + Physics / 2 + Chemistry / 2 (maximum 200)
We could not find this formula in an official prospectus, so treat it as the common method and confirm it in the current selection committee prospectus before you rely on it. Some courses, such as B.Pharm or allied health courses, may use Biology or Maths, whichever is higher; the prospectus will say.
Botany 88 and Zoology 92 give Biology = (88 + 92) / 2 = 90. With Physics 80 and Chemistry 85, the cut off is 90 + 40 + 42.5 = 172.5 out of 200.
Medical cut off calculator: why MBBS is different
A medical cut off calculator based on 12th marks will not help for MBBS or BDS. Admission to those seats is by NEET UG score and rank only, and your board marks matter only for eligibility. Work out your NEET score with the NEET marks calculator (+4 for a right answer, -1 for a wrong one, out of 720).
The old pre NEET medical cut off, Biology / 2 + Physics / 4 + Chemistry / 4 out of 100, no longer decides MBBS seats. If you see it on an old website, ignore it.
Bio maths group and other cut off questions
Students in the bio maths group have all four subjects, so they can work out both an engineering and a paramedical cut off. Run the calculator twice: once with Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and once with Biology, Physics and Chemistry. A cut off calculator for the bio maths group is just these two runs side by side.
Searches for an agri, arts and science, law or 10th cut off calculator ask about admissions that follow different rules set by each university or college. We do not have a confirmed formula for those, so check the prospectus of the course. GDS cut off and selection chance calculator searches are about postal recruitment, which also works differently; this tool does not estimate selection chances for any exam.
Other states rank engineering on entrance tests instead: see the EAMCET marks calculator for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and Maharashtra students can use the MHT CET marks calculator.
Scaling marks that are not out of 100
The formula expects every subject out of 100. If your board shows a subject out of another total, convert it: marks obtained / maximum x 100.
Physics shown as 176 out of 200 becomes 176 / 200 x 100 = 88. Use 88 in the calculator.
Use the total of theory and practical together if that is how the subject is reported. The subject percentage calculator does the scaling, and the 12th percentage calculator gives your overall percentage for forms that ask for it separately.
Mistakes students make with cut off marks
| Mistake | Result | Correct approach |
|---|---|---|
| Adding all three subjects and dividing by 1.5 | Gives Maths too little weight | Maths in full, Physics and Chemistry halved |
| Using the old out of 100 formula | Your cut off looks half the size | Use the out of 200 formula |
| Entering marks out of 200 directly | Calculator rejects them or the cut off is wrong | Scale each subject to 100 first |
| Expecting a 12th cut off for MBBS | MBBS uses NEET only | Use the NEET marks calculator |
| Treating the paramedical method as official | Courses can differ | Confirm in the current prospectus |
Questions students ask
How to calculate engineering cut off marks in Tamil Nadu?
Take your Maths mark out of 100, add half of Physics and half of Chemistry. The result is out of 200. For example, 95, 90 and 92 give 95 + 45 + 46 = 186.
What is the 12th cut off calculator for engineering based on?
It uses the TNEA formula, Maths + Physics / 2 + Chemistry / 2, applied to Class 12 marks. There is no entrance exam for TNEA; the cut off decides your rank, with ties broken by the rules in the brochure.
How is the medical cut off calculated?
MBBS and BDS seats are filled on NEET UG score and rank, not on 12th marks. For nursing and paramedical courses, the common method is Biology + Physics / 2 + Chemistry / 2, scored out of 200, but confirm it in the current prospectus.
How do I calculate biology when I have Botany and Zoology?
Add Botany and Zoology and divide by 2. Botany 88 and Zoology 92 give a Biology mark of 90, which then goes into the paramedical cut off.
Is this a 12th mark cut off calculator for every course?
No. It covers TNEA engineering and the common nursing and paramedical method. MBBS uses NEET, and other courses follow their own prospectus.
What is a good TNEA cut off?
That depends on the college, branch and your community category, and it changes each counselling round. Compare your cut off with the previous round's closing cut offs published for counselling rather than with a fixed number.
How do I turn a cut off into a percentage?
Halve the cut off, or divide it by 200 and then times 100. A cut off of 186 is 93 percent of the maximum.
