An SSC marks calculator multiplies your right answers by the credit per question and takes off a fixed amount for each wrong one, and that amount depends on the exam: CGL and CHSL Tier 1 use +2 and minus 0.5, while GD uses +2 and minus 0.25. For CGL Tier 1, 80 right and 12 wrong give 160 minus 6, which is 154 out of 200. Blank questions never cost marks in any SSC paper.
The Staff Selection Commission runs many exams, and each notice sets its own pattern. This page puts the main ones side by side, explains SSC normalisation in plain words, and sends you to a dedicated page for CGL, CHSL and GD. The marks SSC publishes after normalisation are the ones that count.

Qualifying sections such as the Computer Knowledge Test in CGL and CHSL Tier 2 are left out of the maximum shown here, because they do not add to merit.
- Find your exam and tier in the scheme table on this page.
- Open your response sheet and count right and wrong answers per section.
- Enter the counts in the calculator above, changing marks and penalty if your exam is not CGL Tier 1.
- Read the raw score and divide by the maximum if you need a percentage.
- Wait for SSC's normalised marks before comparing with cut offs.
Setting the SSC marks calculator above for your exam
The tool opens with CGL Tier 1: four blocks of 25 questions worth 2 apiece, with half a mark lost on a miss. For CHSL Tier 1, keep it as it is, since the scheme is identical. For any other paper, edit each row so its question count, credit and deduction agree with the table. Then type your right and wrong counts.
The result shows a score for each row and the total. Both counts are read off the SSC response sheet released alongside the tentative key. Wrong means you marked an option that is not the key's answer; unmarked questions stay out of both counts.
SSC CPO: the changed pattern
CPO recruits Sub Inspectors for Delhi Police and the CAPFs, so it also answers the ssc delhi police marks calculator search for SI posts. Its pattern changed in the latest notice, and many old tables online are now out of date.
- Paper I: 100 questions, 1 mark each, minus 0.25 per wrong answer, 1 hour with a 15 minute timer per part. Four parts of 25: Reasoning, General Knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude and English.
- Paper II: Reasoning, General Knowledge and Quantitative Aptitude with 20 questions each at 2 marks, plus English Comprehension with 100 questions for 200 marks. Half a mark goes for every error.
CPO Paper II: Reasoning 16 right, 3 wrong = 32 - 1.5 = 30.5. GK 12 right, 5 wrong = 24 - 2.5 = 21.5. Quant 15 right, 4 wrong = 30 - 2 = 28. English 78 right, 14 wrong = 156 - 7 = 149.
Total: 30.5 + 21.5 + 28 + 149 = 229 out of 320.
Earlier, Paper I had 200 questions. Because this change is recent, read the SSC CPO notice before relying on any CPO figure, including this one.
SSC normalisation in plain words
Large SSC exams run over many days in many shifts. The question papers differ, and some shifts end up harder. To be fair to everyone, SSC adjusts the raw scores before the merit list. Since a recent notice, it uses the equipercentile method in place of the older formula based on mean and standard deviation.
Here is the idea. First, SSC looks at where you stand inside your own shift, as a percentile: the share of your shift level with or under your raw mark. Then it hands you the mark found at that same percentile once every shift is pooled into one reference scale. If you were at the 80th percentile in a hard shift, you get the mark of the 80th percentile on the common scale, which may be higher than your raw mark.
So no calculator can give your normalised mark before SSC does. It needs the score of every candidate in every shift. Your raw score is still the right way to judge your paper.
SSC marks percentage calculator
Some forms and many students want the score as a percentage of the maximum. Take marks over maximum, then times 100.
| Exam | Marks | Maximum | Percent |
|---|---|---|---|
| CGL Tier 1 | 132 | 200 | 66 |
| CGL Tier 2 Paper I | 312 | 390 | 80 |
| CHSL Tier 2 | 270 | 360 | 75 |
| GD Constable | 104 | 160 | 65 |
| MTS Session II | 99 | 150 | 66 |
| CPO Paper I | 72.25 | 100 | 72.25 |
| CPO Paper II | 256 | 320 | 80 |
The qualifying percentages in CGL and CPO are 30 for UR, 25 for OBC and EWS, and 20 for others. For CGL Tier 1 that means 60, 50 and 40 out of 200.
SSC JE, Stenographer and Selection Post
Searches for an ssc je marks calculator, an ssc stenographer marks calculator or an ssc selection post marks calculator for Phase 13 or Phase 14 are common. We have not covered those patterns here, because each notice sets its own questions, marks and penalty, and we only print schemes we have checked. Copy the numbers from your notice into our free scheme builder, which accepts any marks and penalty. The same goes for Delhi Police constable and other SSC posts not listed in the table.
SSC as a Class 10 board: GPA and percentage
In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra, SSC also means the Class 10 board exam (Secondary School Certificate). If you came here for an ssc gpa calculator, an ssc cgpa calculator or an ssc board percentage calculator, you need a different tool. The 10th percentage calculator works out a percentage from subject marks. An ssc grade points to marks calculator or an ssc marks to gpa calculator must follow the rule printed on your board memo or given by your board, since this page covers only the recruitment exams.
Where SSC scores go wrong
| Habit | Hidden flaw | Safer step |
|---|---|---|
| Use one penalty for every SSC exam | CGL takes 0.5, GD and CPO Paper I take 0.25, MTS Session I takes nothing | Check the table for your exam |
| Use the old CPO Paper I scheme | Paper I is now 100 questions of 1 mark | Follow the current notice |
| Compare raw marks with a normalised cut off | Cut offs are on normalised marks | Treat the gap as a rough guide |
| Count qualifying sections in merit | Computer tests and typing tests do not add marks | Add only the merit sections |
Our cut off tool puts your raw score next to an older cut off. Railway exams follow other rules, covered on the RRB NTPC page and the RRB Group D page.
Questions students ask
How do I calculate marks in an SSC exam?
Multiply your right answers by the marks per question and subtract the penalty times your wrong answers. The marks and penalty depend on the exam, so check the table on this page.
Which SSC exams have 0.25 negative marking?
GD Constable takes 0.25 per wrong answer on 2 mark questions, and CPO Paper I takes 0.25 on 1 mark questions. CGL and CHSL Tier 1 take 0.5.
Is there negative marking in every SSC paper?
Nearly every paper has it, but MTS Session I has none. MTS Session II takes 1 mark for each wrong answer.
What is the SSC normalisation method?
SSC uses the equipercentile method. Your percentile within your shift is mapped to the mark at the same percentile on a common scale, which evens out differences in difficulty between shifts.
Does this page work as an SSC marks percentage calculator?
Yes. Split your score by the paper's maximum, then times 100. So 132 out of 200 in CGL Tier 1 is 66 percent.
Is there an SSC JE or steno marks calculator here?
Use the negative marking calculator with the questions, marks and penalty from your JE or Stenographer notice. We do not print those schemes until we have checked them against the notice.
Is this for the SSC Class 10 board?
No. This page is for Staff Selection Commission exams. For Class 10 board marks, use the 10th percentage calculator and your board's own rule for grade points.
