Percentage to GPA Calculator for Indian Students

CGPA & SGPAPercentage to 4.0Band and straightChecked Nov 2026

A percentage to GPA calculator reads your percentage against a 4.0 band table, so 72 percent falls in the 70 to 74 band and gives 3.0 (B), while the straight scale (percentage divided by 25) gives 2.88. The calculator above shows both.

Neither figure is official. The band table is a common convention and evaluators such as WES work course by course. Use the estimate to see where you stand, then rely on the evaluator's report for applications. Below you will find the full band table, a comparison of both methods, examples from Indian degrees and boards, and what to do for 10 point and 7 point scales.

At a glance

  • Band method

    85+ = 4.0, 80 to 84 = 3.7, 75 to 79 = 3.3, 70 to 74 = 3.0
  • Straight scale

    GPA = percentage / 25
  • 72 percent

    3.0 (B) by bands, 2.88 straight
  • Input

Aggregate percentage from your mark sheet or university conversion
  • Status

Estimate; the band table is a convention, not official
  • Final figure

From the evaluator or university you apply to

Straight scale: GPA = Percentage / 100 x 4 = Percentage / 25

The band method replaces this with the table below. Bands start at the lower figure, so 84.9 is still 3.7 and 85 is 4.0.

Percentage to GPA calculator: the band table

This is the table the calculator reads. It is widely used for Indian percentages, but other sources set the bands differently, for example starting 4.0 at 90.

Entering your percentage

Open the Percentage tab and type your aggregate percentage. For a degree, use the overall figure on your consolidated mark sheet, or the percentage from your university's CGPA conversion if you were graded in CGPA. For Class 12, use the percentage your target university asks for, often the best five subjects.

On screen you see the GPA estimate and letter, then the straight figure beside it, then the arithmetic. As a college percentage GPA calculator it needs the aggregate and not one semester. If you hold a CGPA, switch to the CGPA tab, or convert it first via the CGPA to percentage guide using your university's rule. Typing a percentage into this GPA calculator after that step gives a fairer result.

Straight scale against band table

When you convert percentage to GPA the calculator gives you both readings. The two agree only now and then. The band table jumps at each edge, while the straight scale rises smoothly. Near the top the band table is kinder; at 85 percent it gives a full 4.0 while the straight scale gives 3.4.

Note 79.5: it is below 80, so the band reading stays at 3.3. Do not round a percentage up into the next band.

Worked examples for Indian students

B.Com aggregate 68.4 percent. It falls in the 65 to 69 band: 2.7 (B-). Straight scale: 68.4 / 25 = 2.74.

VTU 2022 scheme, CGPA 8.1. Multiplying by 10, as this scheme does, gives 81 percent. Band reading: 3.7 (A-). Straight: 3.24.

Class 12, best five 91.2 percent. Above 85, so 4.0 (A). Straight: 3.65.

Percentage to GPA on a 10 point scale (India)

Some forms in India ask for a GPA out of 10. People who search for a percentage to GPA calculator 10.0 scale India, or a percentage to GPA calculator on a 10 scale, usually mean this. That is a percentage to CGPA question, and the answer depends on the rule of your university. Under the multiply by 10 rule, 72 percent is 7.2. Under the CBSE style 9.5 rule, 72 / 9.5 = 7.58. Under the VTU 2018 scheme, reversing (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 gives 72 / 10 + 0.75 = 7.95.

The CBSE reverse is plain algebra on the 9.5 factor; the board never issued it. Our percentage to CGPA calculator covers each rule.

Percentage to a 7 point or other scale

There is no standard Indian table for a 7 point GPA, so a percentage to 7 point GPA calculator can only rescale. Plain arithmetic rescaling gives percentage x 7 / 100, so 72 percent becomes 5.04 on 7. Institutions that grade on 7 points, such as some older university patterns, publish their own grade tables, and those decide the real figure.

A percentage to GPA calculator on a 100 scale would add nothing, because a percentage already is a score out of 100. The same goes for any other scale. If the receiving body names its scale but gives no table, state your percentage and the scale it came from rather than guessing a conversion.

Percentile is not percentage

A percentile tells you what share of candidates scored at or below you. NTA, for example, works out a percentile within each shift. It says nothing about the marks you scored out of the maximum, so it cannot be turned into a GPA.

If you searched for a percentile to GPA calculator, use the percentage from your mark sheet instead. For exam percentiles, see the JEE Main percentile calculator.

What evaluators and universities actually do

Credential evaluators such as WES do not convert your aggregate percentage at all. Each subject on the transcript gets its own US letter from their tables, and the GPA is then built with credit weights. Universities that review Indian transcripts directly use their own methods too.

So treat any percentage to GPA calculator for India as a guide for shortlisting. Quote the evaluator's GPA in final applications, and keep your university's conversion certificate with your transcripts.

Questions students ask

What is the method to change a percentage into GPA?

Find your percentage band in the table: 85 and above is 4.0, 80 to 84 is 3.7, 75 to 79 is 3.3 and so on. For a straight estimate, divide by 25, so 72 percent gives 2.88.

What is 80 percent in GPA?

On the band table, 3.7 (A-). On the straight scale, 80 / 25 = 3.2.

What is 65 percent in GPA on a 4.0 scale?

2.7 (B-) on the band table and 2.6 on the straight scale.

Is there a percentage to GPA calculator for India that WES accepts?

No calculator result is accepted as official. WES converts course by course from your transcripts, and its report is what you cite.

What about percentage to GPA on a 10 point scale?

Use your university's rule in reverse: percentage / 10 for x 10 universities, or divide by 9.5 if the CBSE style factor applies. 72 percent gives 7.2 or 7.58.

Can I convert a percentile to GPA?

No. A percentile ranks you against other candidates and is not a share of marks. Use the percentage from your mark sheet.
