This VTU CGPA calculator finds your cumulative grade point average by weighting each semester SGPA with the credits of that semester, the same way VTU prints CGPA on the grade card. Type the SGPA and total credits for each semester you have finished and the CGPA appears at once, along with the percentage for your scheme.
VTU shows a CGPA from the second semester onward. In the 2022 scheme the percentage is simply CGPA x 10. In the 2018 scheme, as well as the older 2015 scheme and 2017 scheme it is (CGPA - 0.75) x 10. The university result and its own certificate are the final word.

CGPA = (SGPA1 x C1 + SGPA2 x C2 + ...) / (C1 + C2 + ...)
SGPA1, SGPA2 are your semester grade point averages. C1, C2 are the total credits registered in those semesters, as printed on each grade card.
Using the VTU CGPA calculator above
Pick the grade scale first: VTU 2022 scheme for O, A+, A grades, or VTU 2018 scheme for S, A, B grades. Then open the tab called CGPA from semesters. Each row takes one SGPA and the credits of that semester. If you leave credits empty the tool treats every semester as equal, which is only right when all semesters carry the same credits.
The output box gives your CGPA out of 10, the credits counted, the total credit points and the percentage under the rule of the scheme you picked. The working line under it lists every SGPA x credit product, which you can note down and check by hand. The other tab, SGPA from grades, works out one semester from course credits and letter grades. It is explained in detail on our VTU SGPA calculator page.
- Open the grade card of every semester you have cleared.
- Note the SGPA and the total credits of each semester.
- Multiply each SGPA by its credits to get credit points.
- Add the credit points of all semesters.
- Divide by the total credits of all semesters. That is your CGPA.
How VTU builds the CGPA from semester results
VTU does not take a plain average of SGPAs. Each semester counts in proportion to its credits. A 22 credit semester pulls the CGPA more than a 20 credit one. That is why the CGPA on your grade card can differ slightly from the simple average you work out on a phone.
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA x credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8.10 | 20 | 162.0 |
| 2 | 8.45 | 20 | 169.0 |
| 3 | 7.90 | 22 | 173.8 |
| 4 | 8.30 | 22 | 182.6 |
| Total | 84 | 687.4 |
The credit figures here are for illustration. Use the totals printed on your own grade cards, since they change with branch and scheme.
Worked example: CGPA after four semesters
Step 1. Credit points: 162.0 + 169.0 + 173.8 + 182.6 = 687.4.
Step 2. Total credits: 20 + 20 + 22 + 22 = 84.
Step 3. CGPA = 687.4 / 84 = 8.183, shown as 8.18.
Step 4. Had you just averaged the four SGPAs, you would get 32.75 / 4 = 8.1875, about 8.19. Semesters 3 and 4 carry 22 credits each, which explains the gap of one hundredth.
Percentage. Under the 2022 scheme, 8.18 x 10 = 81.8 percent. If the same CGPA came from the 2018 scheme, (8.18 - 0.75) x 10 = 74.3 percent.

Grade points behind every VTU SGPA
| Marks in the course | 2022 scheme grade | Points | 2018 scheme grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 90 to 100 | O | 10 | S | 10 |
| 80 to 89 | A+ | 9 | A | 9 |
| 70 to 79 | A | 8 | B | 8 |
| 60 to 69 | B+ | 7 | C | 7 |
| 55 to 59 | B | 6 | D (45 to 59) | 6 |
| 50 to 54 | C | 5 | ||
| 45 to 49 | P (40 to 49) | 4 | ||
| 40 to 44 | E | 4 | ||
| Below 40 | F | 0 | F | 0 |
Note that the 2018 scheme skips grade point 5: D is 6 and E is 4. The 2021 scheme grade table could not be confirmed, so 2021 scheme students should read the points straight off their grade card.
From CGPA to VTU class: FCD, FC and SC
VTU decides the class after converting CGPA to a percentage. First class with distinction (FCD) needs 70 percent or more, first class (FC) needs 60 to under 70, and second class (SC) is below 60. Because the conversion differs, the CGPA you need also differs by scheme.
| Class | Percentage | 2022 scheme CGPA | 2015 scheme to 2018 scheme CGPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| FCD | 70 and above | 7.00 and above | 7.75 and above |
| FC | 60 to below 70 | 6.00 to 6.99 | 6.75 to 7.74 |
| SC | below 60 | 5.00 to 5.99 | below 6.75 |
The 2022 regulations place SC at 50 to below 60 percent. For the 2021 scheme, confirm the class rule with your college exam section.
Errors students make with CGPA and how to avoid them
| Slip | What goes wrong | Fix it by |
|---|---|---|
| Taking a straight mean of SGPAs | VTU gives heavier semesters a bigger say | Typing credits into every row |
| Using the SGPA of a semester with a backlog | The SGPA changes once the failed course is cleared | Taking the SGPA from the latest result after the supplementary exam |
| Choosing the wrong scheme | The 2018 scheme rule takes 0.75 off before multiplying | Reading the scheme code on your grade card |
| Expecting a CGPA in semester 1 | VTU prints only an SGPA after the first semester | Switching to the SGPA tab for semester 1 |
| Rounding each SGPA to one decimal | Small cuts add up over eight semesters | Typing the SGPA exactly as printed |
Where the numbers sit on your VTU result
Copy the SGPAs from your VTU results into the CGPA calculator in the order they were earned. The results portal and the printed grade card list each course with its credits, letter grade and grade point. At the foot of the semester you will find the SGPA and the total credits. From the second semester onward the CGPA also appears. For the 8th sem result the CGPA on the final grade card is the one recruiters and universities read.
If a course is still marked F or absent, the credits for it are not earned yet. Clear it in the next exam, then enter the new SGPA. Revaluation can also change a grade, so wait for the revised card before you fill any form.
Using the VTU CGPA calculator from the 2nd sem to the 8th sem
The same tool covers every stage. After the 2nd sem, enter two rows. After the 5th sem, enter five. For an overall CGPA at the end of the course, enter all eight. Course marks are not needed here, since the SGPA already holds them. Nor is this a VTU marks calculator. If you have only marks and want grades first, the marks to CGPA guide is a better start than this VTU calculator, as it shows how marks map to points. The general SGPA to CGPA page explains weighting for other universities.
MCA and M.Tech students can use the tool too, as long as the grade card uses the same grade points. Check the points printed on your card before you trust the result.
Questions students ask
How is CGPA calculated in VTU?
Each semester SGPA is multiplied by that semester's credits. The products are added up and the sum is shared over all the credits you have registered. The VTU CGPA calculator above does this for you and shows the working line.
Is the VTU CGPA a simple average of SGPAs?
No. It is credit weighted. A plain average is close but can be off by a few hundredths when semesters carry different credits.
Can I use this VTU CGPA calculator for the 1st sem or is it a GPA calculator for later terms only?
Yes, but after semester 1 VTU gives only an SGPA. Use the SGPA from grades tab to work it out from course credits and grades.
Which CGPA gives first class with distinction at VTU?
Under the 2022 scheme you need a CGPA of 7.00 or more, which converts to 70 percent. Under the 2018 scheme, as well as the older 2015 scheme and 2017 scheme you need 7.75 or more, since 7.75 minus 0.75 is 7 and 7 x 10 is 70.
Which conversion applies to the 2021 scheme?
We could not confirm the 2021 scheme rule. Sources differ, so check your grade card or ask VTU for a conversion certificate before you quote a percentage.
Does this overall CGPA calculator VTU tool count a failed course?
It counts what you type. If you enter a semester SGPA that VTU has withheld for a backlog, the CGPA will not match the official one. Wait for the result after the supplementary exam.
