To convert CGPA to GPA out of 4, the quick way is CGPA divided by 10 times 4, so 8.0 becomes 3.2; the band method used by the calculator above first turns 8.0 into a percentage (76 with x 9.5) and reads 3.3 (B+) from a common table. Both are estimates, not official conversions.
Evaluation services such as WES do not use either formula. They read your transcript course by course with their own tables. So use the numbers here to judge where you stand before you apply, and quote the evaluator's figure once you have it. This page explains both methods, gives a conversion table, works through examples from different universities and covers the reverse, GPA to CGPA.

Straight scale: GPA = CGPA / 10 x 4
The band method instead converts CGPA to a percentage and looks up the band: 85 and above = 4.0, 80 to 84 = 3.7, 75 to 79 = 3.3, 70 to 74 = 3.0, and so on down to 40 to 44 = 1.0.
CGPA to GPA: two ways to estimate
The straight scale simply rescales 10 to 4. It is easy and gives a smooth answer, but for a CGPA of 8 or more it comes out lower than the band method, as the table below shows. Any Indian CGPA to US GPA calculator you find online uses one of these two methods or a variant.
The band method first turns your CGPA into a percentage, then reads a letter and GPA from a table: 85 percent and above is 4.0 (A), 80 to 84 is 3.7 (A-), 75 to 79 is 3.3 (B+), 70 to 74 is 3.0 (B), 65 to 69 is 2.7 (B-), 60 to 64 is 2.3 (C+), 55 to 59 is 2.0 (C), 50 to 54 is 1.7 (C-), 45 to 49 is 1.3 (D+), 40 to 44 is 1.0 (D) and below 40 is 0. Many advisers rely on this table, yet it remains a convention, and other sources draw the bands differently.
Using the CGPA to GPA calculator
This page works as a CGPA and GPA calculator in one, much like a US GPA calculator with an Indian front end. It has three tabs. In the CGPA (10) tab, type your CGPA; the calculator multiplies it by 9.5 to get a percentage and then reads the band. The Percentage tab skips that step. The GPA (4) tab runs the reverse.
If your university converts with a different rule, such as x 10 for VIT, SRM, AKTU or Anna University, or (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 for the VTU 2018 scheme, work out your percentage with that rule first, with the help of the CGPA to percentage guide, then type it in the Percentage tab. The result shows the estimated GPA with its letter, the straight scale value for comparison, and the working.

The table shows how much the percentage rule matters. The same CGPA can land in a different band under x 9.5 and x 10.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 95 | 4.0 (A) | 100 | 4.0 (A) | 4 |
| 9.5 | 90.25 | 4.0 (A) | 95 | 4.0 (A) | 3.8 |
| 9 | 85.5 | 4.0 (A) | 90 | 4.0 (A) | 3.6 |
| 8.5 | 80.75 | 3.7 (A-) | 85 | 4.0 (A) | 3.4 |

| 5 | 47.5 | 1.3 (D+) | 50 | 1.7 (C-) | 2 |
Worked examples from three universities
VIT, CGPA 8.5. VIT multiplies by 10, giving 85 percent. On the band table that is 4.0 (A). Had you typed 8.5 in the CGPA tab, the x 9.5 step would give 80.75 and 3.7 (A-). The straight scale says 3.4.
VTU 2018 scheme, CGPA 7.6. (7.6 minus 0.75) x 10 = 68.5 percent, inside the 65 to 69 band: 2.7 (B-). The straight scale gives 3.04.
GTU, CPI 7.2. GTU calls its CGPA the CPI. (7.2 minus 0.5) x 10 = 67 percent, so the band reading is 2.7 (B-), and the straight scale gives 2.88.
How WES and other evaluators convert
WES does not apply one formula to your CGPA. It takes each course on your transcript, maps its grade to a US letter grade using tables for your board or university, and then works out a GPA weighted by credits. Its own iGPA tool gives an estimate before you apply. Other evaluators follow similar course by course methods, and many US and Canadian universities do their own reading of Indian transcripts.
So a WES GPA calculator result, or any CGPA to GPA estimate, can differ from the final figure. Treat the Indian CGPA to GPA calculator result here as a planning figure. Send official transcripts, keep the conversion certificate from your university, and quote the evaluator's GPA in applications once it is issued.
GPA to CGPA: going back to the 10 point scale
The straight reverse is GPA x 2.5. A 3.4 GPA gives 8.5 on a 10 point scale, and a 3.0 gives 7.5. The band table can only give a range in reverse: a 3.3 means a percentage somewhere from 75 to 79.
This helps if an Indian application wants a 10 point number and you hold a 4.0 GPA from abroad. If the form or institution gives its own conversion, follow that. For a percentage from a 4.0 GPA, see GPA to percentage, and to build a GPA from course grades, use the GPA calculator.
4 point CGPA to percentage
A few institutions print a CGPA out of 4 rather than 10. In that case the straight scale percentage is CGPA / 4 x 100, so 3.2 out of 4 reads as 80 percent. If your institution publishes its own 4 point to percentage rule, use that rule instead, since it is what employers and universities will accept.
Do not put a 4 point figure into a 10 point converter, or the reverse. A 4.0 on the US scale is the top grade, whereas a 4 on India's 10 point scale barely clears most pass grades.
Canada, Germany and other destinations
Canadian universities do not share one GPA scale, and each sets its own rules for Indian transcripts. An Indian percentage to Canadian GPA estimate is useful for shortlisting, but check each university's admissions page.
Germany does not use GPA at all. Universities there convert Indian grades with the modified Bavarian formula onto the 1.0 to 4.0 German scale, where 1.0 is best. Try the German grade calculator for that.
Mistakes with CGPA to GPA
| Error | Effect | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Letting the tool apply 9.5 when your university multiplies by 10 | The band can drop by one step | Type your real percentage in the Percentage tab |
| Writing an estimate as your official GPA | It may not match the evaluator's report | Mark it as an estimate or wait for the report |
| Writing a 10 point CGPA in a 4 point box | 8.2 out of 4 looks impossible | Convert, or state the scale |
| Rounding the percentage up into a higher band | Misstates your grades | Use the exact percentage |
Questions students ask
What is the formula for CGPA to GPA out of 4?
The straight method is CGPA / 10 x 4, so 8.0 gives 3.2. The band method converts CGPA to a percentage and reads the 4.0 band table. Both are estimates.
Is there an official Indian CGPA to US GPA formula?
No. Evaluators such as WES convert course by course using their own tables, and universities may do their own reading. The figures here help you estimate.
What is 8.5 CGPA in GPA?
On the straight scale, 3.4. On the band table it is 4.0 (A) if your university uses x 10 (85 percent), or 3.7 (A-) if it uses x 9.5.
How do I convert GPA to CGPA?
Multiply the GPA by 2.5 for a straight scale estimate. A 3.6 GPA gives 9.0. Use an institution's own rule if it gives one.
Can I use a CPI to GPA calculator for GTU?
Yes. GTU's CPI is its CGPA. Convert it with (CPI - 0.5) x 10 to a percentage, then use the Percentage tab. A CPI of 7.2 gives 67 percent and 2.7 (B-).
Does WES use a CGPA calculator?
WES does not convert a single CGPA. It converts each course grade on your transcript and then computes a GPA, so its result can differ from any calculator estimate.
