VTU SGPA Calculator: Semester Grade Point Average

UniversitiesOne semesterO to F and S to FChecked Nov 2026

The VTU SGPA calculator takes every course, multiplies its credit value by the point attached to your letter grade, sums those credit points and divides by the semester's total credits. If a semester has 18 credits and you earn 155 credit points, your SGPA is 155 / 18 = 8.61.

Pick your scheme, then choose a grade and type the credits for each course. The tool works for every term, and it can roll several SGPAs into a CGPA as well. The SGPA that VTU prints on the result remains the official one.

  • Official source

SGPA = (C1 x G1 + C2 x G2 + ... + Cn x Gn) / (C1 + C2 + ... + Cn)

C is the credit value of a course and G is the grade point of the letter grade you got in it. n is the number of courses you registered for that semester.

How the VTU SGPA calculator above works

The grade scale box sets which letters you see. Choose VTU 2022 scheme (O to F) if your card shows O, A+ and B+. Choose VTU 2018 scheme (S to F) if it shows S, A, B and so on. In the SGPA from grades tab, each row has a course name, a credits field and a grade picker. The name is only for your reference.

As soon as one row is complete, the box on the right gives the SGPA (a number up to 10), how many credits went in, the credit point sum and a percentage worked out with the rule for your scheme. If any row holds a grade below the pass point, the tool warns you, because that semester is not cleared yet. Keep the VTU results page open next to this SGPA calculator so you can copy each result line directly.

  1. Choose VTU 2022 scheme or VTU 2018 scheme in the grade scale box.
  2. Add one row per course, including labs and the mini project.
  3. Type the credits of the course as listed on the result.
  4. Pick the letter grade you got.
  5. Read the SGPA and the working line in the result box.

Letter grades and points used in VTU SGPA

Every course gets a letter from its total marks out of 100. The letter carries a fixed point value, and only that value enters the SGPA.

2022 scheme: marks to letter to points
Total marksLetterGrade point
90 to 100O10
80 to 89A+9
70 to 79A8
60 to 69B+7
55 to 59B6
50 to 54C5
40 to 49P4
0 to 39F0

In the 2018 scheme the letters are S (90 and above, 10), A (80 to 89, 9), B (70 to 79, 8), C (60 to 69, 7), D (45 to 59, 6), E (40 to 44, 4) and F (below 40, 0). There is no grade worth 5 in that scheme. Special entries such as AB for absent are not grades and do not carry points. The 2021 scheme table is not confirmed, so read those points from your own card.

Example: a 2022 scheme semester worked out

Mathematics4A+936
Data structures4O1040
Digital design3A824
Object oriented programming3B+721
Elective3A824
Lab1O1010
Total18155

SGPA = 155 / 18 = 8.611, which VTU would show as 8.61. Converted with the 2022 scheme rule, 8.61 x 10 gives 86.1 percent.

The course names and credits above are a sample. Real credit values depend on your branch and semester, so always copy them from the result.

Example: a 2018 scheme semester with S to F grades

Seven courses with credits 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 2 and 2 (22 in all) and grades A, B, S, C, D, A and B.

Credit points: 4 x 9 + 4 x 8 + 4 x 10 + 3 x 7 + 3 x 6 + 2 x 9 + 2 x 8 = 36 + 32 + 40 + 21 + 18 + 18 + 16 = 181.

SGPA = 181 / 22 = 8.227, shown as 8.23.

Percentage under the 2018 scheme rule: (8.23 - 0.75) x 10 = 74.8.

The D grade here is worth 6, not 5. Students who copy the 2022 scheme table onto a 2018 scheme card often get this wrong and end up a little low.

Same steps for each term: 1st sem through 8th sem

The VTU SGPA calculator works the same way in the 3rd sem as in the 5th sem or 6th sem or 8th sem because only the courses and credits change. In the final semester the project and internship carry large credits, so a single grade there moves the SGPA a lot. Enter those rows with care.

To carry results forward, switch to the CGPA from semesters tab, or use the full VTU CGPA calculator page. For example, a 3rd semester SGPA of 8.61 over 18 credits and a 4th semester SGPA of 7.95 over 20 credits give (154.98 + 159.00) / 38 = 8.26 as the CGPA.

Turning a VTU SGPA into a percentage

VTU writes its conversion rules for CGPA. Students often apply the same rule to one semester for an internship form. For the 2022 scheme that means SGPA x 10. For the older schemes (2015 scheme, 2017 scheme, 2018 scheme) it means subtracting 0.75 first. The VTU CGPA to percentage page lists common values and the class each one earns. A general SGPA to percentage guide covers other universities.

If a form asks for an official semester percentage, ask your college whether a figure from VTU is needed. A conversion certificate is issued by the university, not by any calculator.

Questions students ask

How do I calculate SGPA in VTU?

Multiply each course's credits by the points of the grade you got, add those numbers, then split that sum over the semester's credits. The VTU SGPA calculator above shows each product in the working line.

Is there an SGPA to CGPA calculator for VTU here?

Yes. Switch to the CGPA from semesters tab and type each SGPA with its credits, or open the VTU CGPA calculator page.

Does an F grade count in the VTU SGPA?

F carries 0 points. The calculator flags it as below the pass grade. The SGPA you get with an F row is not final, so redo it after you clear the course.

What is a good SGPA in VTU?

Under the 2022 scheme an SGPA of 7 or more is equal to 70 percent, the first class with distinction level, if your whole record stays there. Under the 2018 scheme you need 7.75 for the same 70 percent.

Does the tool handle 2021 scheme grade cards?

You can work out the SGPA if you type the grade points as printed on your card. The 2021 scheme percentage rule is still unverified on our side, so lean on the printed card or a VTU certificate for that part.

Why does my answer differ from the SGPA on the VTU result?

Usually a course is missing, a credit figure went in incorrectly, or the wrong scheme was picked. Check each row against the result line by line.
