7 CGPA to percentage comes to 70 percent at any university that simply multiplies by 10, and 66.5 percent if you apply the CBSE factor of 9.5; the VTU 2018 scheme gives 62.5. Your grade card's regulation tells you which of these to use.
For many engineering students the 7 band holds the most important line on the grade card: first class with distinction. Under the VTU 2018 scheme, JNTUK and the SPPU engineering table it begins at 7.75. This page shows that line university by university, the maths for climbing to it, worked cases, and the full chart from 7.00 to 7.99. The university that issued your grade card has the final say on the converted figure.

x 10 rule: Percentage = CGPA x 10; VTU 2018 scheme: (CGPA - 0.75) x 10
Use CGPA x 9.5 for CBSE and Delhi University, (CGPA - 0.5) x 10 for JNTUH, GTU and BPUT, and the band table for SPPU.
The 7.75 question: where distinction starts
Students in this band ask one thing more than any other: am I in distinction or not? The answer changes from one university to the next.
| University or scheme | Distinction from | Note |
|---|---|---|
| VTU 2018 scheme | 70 percent, which is CGPA 7.75 | First class from 60 percent, CGPA 6.75 |
| VTU 2022 scheme | 70 percent, which is CGPA 7.0 | Here CGPA x 10 is the percentage |
| JNTUK R20 | CGPA 7.75 | Only without any supplementary appearance |
| SPPU engineering | CGPA 7.75 | From secondary sources; varies by faculty |
| AKTU | 7.5 for First Division with Honours | No paper may need a second attempt, and all 8 semesters must finish on time; the newer ordinance also asks for 20 MOOC credits |
| GTU | CGPA 7.1 | From secondary sources |
The VTU rule is in clause 18OB7.0 of the VTU B.E. regulations, and the JNTUK line is in the R20 regulations.
- Check which scheme or regulation is printed on your grade card.
- Note your CGPA with both decimals.
- Enter it in the calculator above and pick the matching rule.
- Compare the result with the distinction line of your university.
- If you are short of the line, use the improvement formula below to plan the remaining semesters.
7 CGPA to percentage across the main rules
Scan one row and you will see how far apart the rules sit for a single CGPA. The x 10 figure and the VTU 2018 scheme figure always sit 7.5 marks apart, while CBSE trails x 10 by 3.5 at 7.00 and by close to 4 at 7.99.

Mumbai University has dropped 7.1 x CGPI + 11 for colleges teaching Arts, Science, Commerce and Management; they now take your percentage straight from marks. That column helps only with older results.
Calculator inputs and what you get back
The tool needs two things: your CGPA and the body whose rule applies. Type the CGPA as it appears on the consolidated grade card, for example 7.64, and choose your university or board in the dropdown.
You get the percentage in big digits with the rule name under it, plus a comparison list showing the same CGPA under other rules. If a recruiter gives you a percentage cut off, press Swap direction and type that percentage to see the CGPA it needs under your rule.
Worked cases between 7.00 and 7.99
VTU 2018 scheme, 7.74 against 7.75. (7.74 minus 0.75) x 10 = 69.9, which is first class. (7.75 minus 0.75) x 10 = 70, which is first class with distinction. One hundredth of a point moves the class.
JNTUK R20, CGPA 7.76. (7.76 minus 0.75) x 10 = 70.1 percent. The CGPA is above 7.75, so the student gets distinction only if no subject was cleared in a supplementary exam.
SPPU, CGPA 7.89. 7.89 falls in the 6.75 to 8.24 band, so the rule is 10 x CGPA minus 7.5: 78.9 minus 7.5 = 71.4 percent.
AKTU, CGPA 7.5. AKTU's ordinance multiplies by 10, which turns 7.5 into 75 percent.
Can you still reach 7.75? The improvement maths
If you are a few semesters from the end and sit just below a line, work out the average you need in the semesters left. With equal credits per semester the rule is: needed average = (target x total semesters minus current CGPA x semesters done) / semesters left.
Equal credits. CGPA 7.6 after 6 of 8 semesters, target 7.75. (7.75 x 8 minus 7.6 x 6) / 2 = (62 minus 45.6) / 2 = 8.2. You need an SGPA of about 8.2 in each of the last two semesters.
Credit weighted. CGPA 7.45 over 120 credits, with 40 credits left, target 7.75. (7.75 x 160 minus 7.45 x 120) / 40 = (1240 minus 894) / 40 = 8.65.
If the answer comes out above 10, the target is out of reach for this degree. Use the SGPA to CGPA calculator to test different semester scores.

Traps near the distinction line
| Trap | Result | Instead |
|---|---|---|
| Rounding 7.74 to 7.8 on a VTU form | Shows distinction that the grade card does not give | Write the printed CGPA and the class printed with it |
| Using x 10 for a VTU 2018 scheme result | 7.5 becomes 75 instead of 67.5 | Subtract 0.75 before multiplying |
| Expecting JNTUK distinction with a supplementary pass | The rule bars it even at 7.75 or more | Plan to clear papers at the first attempt |
| Averaging SGPAs when credits differ | The CGPA comes out wrong | Multiply every SGPA by that semester's credits first |
