Percentage to CGPA is the reverse of your board or university rule: under CBSE's 9.5 rule the percentage is divided by 9.5, which turns 75 percent into a CGPA of about 7.89, while under a x 10 university rule you divide by 10 and the same 75 percent is 7.5. Enter your percentage in the calculator above and pick the rule that matches your institution.
Keep in mind that a reversed figure is an estimate. A real CGPA comes from grade points earned course by course, so it suits a form that wants a CGPA while your mark sheet only gives a percentage, and say on the form which rule you used if there is space.
At a glance
CBSE style
CGPA = percentage / 9.5x 10 universities
CGPA = percentage / 10Minus 0.75 rule
CGPA = percentage / 10 + 0.75Minus 0.5 rule
CGPA = percentage / 10 + 0.5Status
An estimate; CBSE never issued a reverse ruleMaximum
CGPA cannot go above 10
CGPA = Percentage / 9.5 (CBSE) or Percentage / 10 (x 10 rule)
Use the inverse of the rule that your board or university applies in the forward direction. For a rule that subtracts k before multiplying by 10, add k back after dividing by 10.
What to enter in the percentage to CGPA calculator
Type your overall percentage in Your percentage, for example 78.4. Then set University or board. It opens on CBSE, which divides by 9.5. Pick "Multiply by 10" if you studied at Anna University, AKTU, KTU, SRM or VIT, or your university's name if it appears in the list.
The large figure is your estimated CGPA out of 10. Below it the tool shows what the same percentage gives under the other common rules (x 10, the VTU 2018 scheme rule, GTU, SPPU and old Mumbai), so you can see the spread. If you need the opposite direction, press Swap direction, or switch to the CGPA to percentage converter.
- Take your overall percentage from the mark sheet, to two decimals.
- Decide which rule applies: CBSE, x 10, or a minus rule.
- Divide by 9.5 for CBSE or by 10 for the others.
- For a minus rule, add 0.5 or 0.75 to the result.
- Round to two decimals and cap the answer at 10.
Percentage to CGPA formula for each rule
Every reverse formula is simply the forward rule run backward. Take the forward rule your university uses and undo each step in the opposite order. Whether you ask how to get CGPA from percentage or how to convert percentage to CGPA, the method is the same.
| Forward rule | Who uses it | Reverse formula |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA x 9.5 | CBSE old Class 10, Delhi University | Percentage / 9.5 |
| CGPA x 10 | VIT, SRM, AKTU, Anna, KTU, VTU 2022 scheme | Percentage / 10 |
| (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 | MAKAUT, JNTUK, VTU 2018 scheme | Percentage / 10 + 0.75 |
| (CGPA - 0.5) x 10 | JNTUH, GTU, BPUT | Percentage / 10 + 0.5 |
| SPPU bands | SPPU 2019 pattern onward | Undo the line of your band |
CBSE published the forward rule only. Dividing by 9.5 is the algebra that undoes it, and it is widely used, but it is not a CBSE conversion. For SPPU, first find which band your percentage falls in. For example, 84.2 percent sits in the band built on 12 x CGPA - 25, so CGPA = (84.2 + 25) / 12 = 9.1.
How to find CGPA from percentage: worked examples
70 percentage to CGPA, CBSE rule. 70 / 9.5 = 7.368, so about 7.37.
75 percent, x 10 university. 75 / 10 = 7.5.
80 percent, JNTUH. JNTUH uses (CGPA - 0.5) x 10, so CGPA = 80 / 10 + 0.5 = 8.5. Check: (8.5 - 0.5) x 10 = 80.
73 percent, MAKAUT. 73 / 10 + 0.75 = 7.3 + 0.75 = 8.05. Check: (8.05 - 0.75) x 10 = 73.
That is how to calculate CGPA from percentage under the four most common rules. Always do the check line. Put your answer back into the forward rule and you should land on the percentage you started with.
Percentage to CGPA out of 10: ready table
| Percentage | / 9.5 (CBSE) | / 10 | / 10 + 0.75 | / 10 + 0.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 | 6.32 | 6.00 | 6.75 | 6.50 |
| 65 | 6.84 | 6.50 | 7.25 | 7.00 |
| 70 | 7.37 | 7.00 | 7.75 | 7.50 |
| 72.6 | 7.64 | 7.26 | 8.01 | 7.76 |
| 73 | 7.68 | 7.30 | 8.05 | 7.80 |
| 75 | 7.89 | 7.50 | 8.25 | 8.00 |
| 77.8 | 8.19 | 7.78 | 8.53 | 8.28 |
| 79.6 | 8.38 | 7.96 | 8.71 | 8.46 |
| 80 | 8.42 | 8.00 | 8.75 | 8.50 |
| 83.4 | 8.78 | 8.34 | 9.09 | 8.84 |
| 84 | 8.84 | 8.40 | 9.15 | 8.90 |
| 85 | 8.95 | 8.50 | 9.25 | 9.00 |
| 86 | 9.05 | 8.60 | 9.35 | 9.10 |
| 90 | 9.47 | 9.00 | 9.75 | 9.50 |
Values are rounded to two decimals. Under the CBSE column anything above 95 percent works out to more than 10, which is not a valid CGPA, so treat it as 10.
When you actually need this conversion
The common cases are a scholarship or college form that has only a CGPA box while your Class 10 or 12 mark sheet shows marks, a university portal that asks every applicant for a CGPA, and comparing your percentage with a friend who has a CGPA.
For CBSE Class 10 and 12 today, the board issues marks, not a CGPA, and it does not work out an overall percentage either. First get your percentage from the best five subjects with the marks percentage calculator, then divide it here. If the form gives its own conversion rule, use that and ignore this page.
Percentage to CGPA out of 4
A CGPA out of 4 is a US style GPA, used for applications abroad. There is no fixed formula from Indian percentage to a 4 point GPA. The straight method divides the percentage by 25, so 80 percent becomes 3.2. A common band table puts 85 percent and above at 4.0 and 80 to 84 percent at 3.7. Evaluation services such as WES go course by course, so their result can differ. Use the percentage to GPA calculator for both methods side by side.
Mistakes when going from percentage to CGPA
| Error | What it causes | Correct approach |
|---|---|---|
| Dividing by 9.5 for a university that uses x 10 | CGPA comes out too high | Use the reverse of your own university's rule |
| Writing the estimate as your official CGPA | Verification can reject it | Mark it as converted, or attach the mark sheet |
| Forgetting to add 0.5 or 0.75 back | Answer is too low by that amount | Divide by 10, then add the deduction |
| Using subject percentage instead of overall | Gives the CGPA of one subject | Use the total of all counted subjects |
For a single subject under CBSE's old scheme, the same idea works on grade points: a subject percentage of 76 divided by 9.5 gives a grade point of 8, which was a B1.
Where to find the percentage you start from
For school results, your Class 10 or 12 mark sheet lists marks per subject, and you work out the percentage from the subjects the form asks for. For a university that prints marks, the consolidated marks memo or final year mark sheet shows the aggregate. If you hold only a CGPA, you do not need this page at all: use the CGPA to percentage page instead, or the marks to CGPA calculator if you have raw marks.
Questions students ask
How to convert percentage into CGPA?
Reverse the rule that applies to you. Divide by 9.5 for the CBSE style rule, use 10 as the divisor for x 10 universities, and for the minus rules add 0.5 or 0.75 after dividing by 10.
What is 70 percentage in CGPA?
About 7.37 under the CBSE divide by 9.5 method and 7.0 under a x 10 rule. Under JNTUH's rule it is 7.5 and under MAKAUT's it is 7.75.
What is 75 percentage to CGPA?
75 divided by 9.5 is 7.89, and 75 divided by 10 is 7.5. Use whichever rule your board or university follows.
What is the percentage to CGPA formula for CBSE?
CGPA is roughly percentage divided by 9.5. CBSE only published the forward rule (CGPA x 9.5), so the reverse is a common method rather than an official one.
Can I find my real CGPA from my percentage?
Not exactly. A real CGPA depends on the grade in each course and its credits. A reversed percentage gives a close estimate, which is fine for comparison but not for a grade card.
What is percentage to CGPA out of 4?
Divide by 25 for a straight 4 point figure, or use a band table where 85 percent and above counts as 4.0. The percentage to GPA calculator shows both.
